Freebie Friday! The Hidden Pocket Tote

Prj034
This one is so simple, but just making it just made me so happy 😀 For one, it used up a lot of scraps that I had been keeping around for far too long. This seafoam green faux suede in particular – I bought it to test out making some gloves way back in high school! I bought way too much so I’ve been using up the scraps ever since. And now it’s finally gone! The other thing I love is the little hidden pocket feature on the front of the tote – the entire center panel of printed fabric you see is actually one large pocket that’s accessed from a clean little opening on the side. It’s made using a very simple method, but I just love how sharp it looks so it always makes me smile.

And lastly as I was using up my scraps to put the bag together, I realized the dimensions of the bag would end up being a little wide but short – that’s when I realized they were the perfect dimensions for a laptop! So while of course you can use the tote as a regular bag to carry library books or maybe some knitting, I decided to go gung ho and make mine a laptop bag with padding so the front pocket can be used for pens, flash cards, or your phone ^-^

Freebie Friday! The Gothic Lolita Purse

Prj033
Even though I’ve already done a Gothic Lolita inspired bag earlier, I’ve got to say there are dozens more Lolita styles I’d like to try before saying I’ve touched on them all >w< so here’s another one! Rather than a large satchel like the previous project, this one is more of a dainty-style purse with almost a tube-like shape. And of course it has some nice lace detail and a Lolita style painted motifs.
The fabric is the absolute last from a skirt I made way back at the beginning of college XD So once again I’ve finally used up fabric that I had been carrying around for years; I couldn’t be happier :B!

Freebie Friday! The Zip Top Purse

Prj032
Prj032B
I guess this purse is more conceptual than anything >w< It appears to be a typical purse with a flap, but in this case the flap is the top of the bag, which folds over to create the flap. The folding point is made from two grommets that attach on the side where the strap is attached. Then there’s an extra pocket on the front for good measure that’s easy to access. The front skull appliqué is of course completely optional XD but I just had to add it due to my own quirky tastes.
Once again with this purse I was able to put another long-held scrap fabric out to pasture :B Like with most of my plaid scraps, I had this one lying around after I made a pair of pants with it. Also like a lot of other plaid fabrics, I kept making little projects here and there with the scraps until finally this last one put the remainder out of its misery! Woo! Destashing!

Freebie Friday! The Pleated Patch Purse

Prj031
I was in the mood to make another dainty-looking purse again ^w^ This time I made use of some tiny scraps such for the corner patches, while the top section is made from the last bit of faux suede paisley that I’ve had since high school! I used it to make a long jacket initially, and I’ve been using the leftovers for other little crafts ever since. I’m kind of a sucker for putting together purple and gray, so the rest of the details for this purse just came together from there. I wanted something that looked a little feminine but also classy :B

Freebie Friday! The Side Cinch Tote

Prj030
I must admit, while I really like the finished look of this tote bag, I think its purpose was more to destash little leftovers than anything else. I just started grabbing little bits of fabrics I had leftover and found that they really started to look good together! This especially goes for the store-bought wooden handles, the braided cording, and the velvet ribbon (used to attach the handles). I was able to finally get them out of my stash, but on the plus side they all match beautifully 😀

This bag itself is made out of strips of various fabrics for this awesome layered look, the top has purchased handles that are attached via velvet ribbon, and the sides cinch up with some braided cording that gives some texture to the final tote ^-^

Freebie Friday! The Bot Bag

Prj028
Today is bringing back a bit of nostalgia x3! By that I mean the fabrics from this bag are the ones I used for projects from when I first started up my blog, both the Frayed Tote Bag and the Zipper Bucket Bag. That’s about as nostalgic as one can get from a blog that isn’t even 6 months old yet :B

With these leftover fabrics, I thought they had almost a mod-looking color scheme, and with some white leftover vinyl I thought a robot motif would look awfully cute! So I went all out with the bolt pattern through the whole bag 😀 The contrast top and bottom actually repeats in the lining as well, which is also done in two pieces. Then from the seam in the middle there’s a hidden pocket done with one of my favorite techniques!

This type of bag is actually just a flat one with no depth. That’s not usually my taste, but I think they’re nice once in a while, because they’re about the only kind of bag that’s good to hold books in. I don’t know about the rest of you, but when I try to make trips to the library with bags that have depth they just flop around x3

Etsy Store Update!

At the moment I’m preparing to attend an anime convention called Metrocon in July, for the next few weeks I’ll be working on making some products to sell there. Up until then I’ll have those new products on my Etsy store in case anyone in the net-o-sphere is interested :3

PunkBunnyTeal
First is a teal version of my Punk Bunny Hat, which got everyone’s attention on DeviantArt last year by being a daily Deviation XD of course everyone wanted one and I was in barely any position to make them as I was working on books at the time. I finally got around to making some more, albeit in a different color scheme, that way I could use up some scrap plaid fabric I had 😀

Zombunny9
Next is just a little Zombie Bunny (Zombunny) hat that I made with some extra olive green fleece I had :B It’s a very simple design without all the blood and guts of other zombies, but it’s one of my favorites nonetheless >w<

Fox2
Next is a very cute Fox Hoodie that I whipped up from scraps of orange and white fleece. Unfortunately I didn’t have much fabric so I could only make the one. It features black hand mitts, an adorable fox face, and attached ears.

Backpack9Backpack8Backpack5
And up last is a bag that’s based off of one of the projects from Sewing Stylish Handbags. It’s arguably one of the most unusual projects from the book xB But in the book you can find a pattern for a reversible creature bag just like this. I modified the pattern to make one side of the bag into a Zombie Kitty and the reverse side into a Killer Rabbit (a la Monty Python and the Holy Grail). The bright red eyes and drooling mouths are particularly weird and creepy, so I suggest this bag is definitely not for the faint of heart or those with grown-up tastes XD The middle reversible zipper is both the opening for the bag and the mouth of your creature, and the straps clip on with hook rings so you can remove the them when you turn the bag right side out to reveal your new character.

That’s all I have to show off now! I’ll be getting back to work and hopefully have another update for you soon! 😀

Freebie Friday! The Raven Hobo Bag

Prj027
I don’t mean to confuse anyone, but today’s project has nothing to do with birds >w< Many companies give their items cute girl names, for some reason this bag made me think of a raven x3 so I added the dark wings to bring the idea home.

This burgundy denim is leftover from another bag I made some time back, while the contrast black vinyl I had used to make some belts for a costume. The two seemed to go well together in sort of a 90s goth kind of way, so I thought I’d go for it 😀 And I had an extra zipper lying around that matched perfectly. That and when I realized I hadn’t made a hobo bag in my huge collection of bag projects, it seemed like all the ideas came together!

Sewing Stylish Handbags & Totes! My latest book is released!

Sewing Stylish Handbags & Totes: Chic to Unique Bags & Purses that You Can Make

Sewing Stylish Handbags & Totes: Chic to Unique Bags & Purses that You Can Make

My latest book, Sewing Stylish Handbags & Totes, was released in the past few days, so I’m happy to say that it’s now available for you all to buy! I’m a bit of a bagophile myself, so I was very excited to take on this project, creating 18 interesting and varied bag designs that will suit every taste. My goal in writing this book was definitely to make a collection of bags that would make a wide variety of people happy. In addition to that, I wanted to design classic bags with an interesting twist.

For instance there’s a tried-and-true shopping tote, but it has a zippered wallet attached for folding the bag up and zipping it shut when you don’t need it! There’s also a messenger bag, but it has an expandable bottom section that nearly doubles the size of the bag when you need to carry the big stuff. Nearly every bag has options for embellishment, including appliqué designs and templates that work perfectly for fabric paint stencils. The designs range from techie to mod, kawaii to ornate. You’ll see a lot of my kawaii style in some of the options, so keep in mind if that’s not really your aesthetic, the variations are completely optional. I think you’ll find the bare bones patterns to be very classic and casual designs. You can read about the whole dish if you’re interested in how the book came together ^-^

One of the main things that makes me proud of the book though, are the huge tutorial sections that explain how to implement bag hardware, which can really make a handbag look special. I’ll show you how to install zippers, snaps, buckles, eyelets, strap adjusters, metal rings, turn lock closures, magnetic snaps, and many many more things. If you’re like me, seeing the hardware transform your bag from handmade to high-end will really get you excited to whip out your machine.

I hope you’ll give my book a look with the see inside feature, so you can see if the bags are your style, then please give it a try if you have a bag addiction like me!

Freebie Friday: The Monokuro Boo Bag

Prj025
This bag was inspired by one of my favorite characters from the Japanese company San-X. They’re much like Sanrio in that they design adorable characters and market them with plush toys, stationery, accessories, you name it. They have a pair of piggies there called Monokuro Boo, which loosely translates to “monochrome pig,” except, you know, it’s said in that cutesy Japanese style ^w^
They’re called that because the two little pair of piggies are usually colored black and white. Their slogan is “Simple is best!” and their design follows that to a T; with simple hearts, clovers and other shapes that aren’t too gaudy. It’s minimalism in its cutest form, and though I’ve taken the piggies out of their black and white color scheme, I thought the fabrics I used to make this bag nicely reflected their simple aesthetic.
This teal fabric was leftover from a skirt I made waay back when, and with some scraps of brown faux suede, green twill, and khaki linen, the scheme made me think of fall farmer’s market shopping, or some other similar relaxing pastime. So I thought a bag that you could use to haul around your fresh shopping goodies seemed perfect ❤
