Free Pattern Friday! Night & Light Fury Chibi Plush Backpack

Hi everyone!
As you may know, I’ve done some plush backpacks before for sale, but I had a lot of requests for a free version ❤ So I thought it would be a fun challenge to see if I could design a plush backpack that was a good bit simpler, but still looked like a proper stuffed animal. Which brings us to Toothless & Light Fury!
I had developed this really chubby body shape that has barely any neck so it optimizes the storage space 😀 When you get down to it’s just basically a front and back with a lot of extra details sewn between the seams. It doesn’t have quite as much curved sewing or 3D shapes as my paid backpack patterns.

I found that this shape worked really well for Toothless – and since I hadn’t done anything for the last HTTYD movie I went for it! With any luck it might be helpful to those that wanted something a little easier than my paid backpack patterns. It’s still a little difficult for complete beginners, since it’s both a backpack and a plush and it has a lot of pieces. There’s an option for a non-adjustable strap as well as an adjustable one, so if you stick with non-adjustable that will go faster as well. All in all I rated it a 5/10.

The original pattern comes with applique templates, but there are embroidery files as well 😀 The eyes are stitched with applique because they’re so big, and there are little skulls for the tail fin too. Everything fits on 4” x 4” hoops so no one is left out!

If you want to check out some other fun color variations, I made a regular dragon version from Spoonflower fabric ❤ The pieces are available as cut & sew kits – though you still need to provide straps and a zipper. These samples are made from a full yard of fleece, which works well as both the plush material and the inner lining. And Spoonflower is having a free shipping promotion this week too so bonus!

I hope you all enjoy it!

Throwback Thursday! Kitty Purse

Hey everyone!
I decided to take a walk down memory lane today and revisit an old pattern of mine 😀 I released my Kitty Purse pattern back in October of 2014. It really took off as a popular pattern and is still one of my most-downloaded tutorials to this day. Back then my patterns weren’t quite as detailed and comprehensive as they are now, so I thought it might be fun to remake it in some new fabric and give the pattern the update it deserves!

So now not only does the pattern have tons more photos and illustrations, but it has some highly requested features as well. The top of the purse now has a zipper closure, and the strap now uses a more traditional strap adjuster rather than a buckle. At the time I made the original I just used what I had, but this time I could use some proper supplies 🙂 I hope you all like the update!

Freebie Friday! London Calling Bag

Prj070

This project is quite intensive, because it was one of those passion projects. I’ve been needing a huge bag with loads of pockets to carry every little thing I need when I’m out of the house for a while. It has a large back pocket, zippered front pocket, pockets inside for a sketchbook, pens, and a hidden pocket too 🙂 I used it during my most recent move to Daytona and it really saved me! Holding all that paperwork, pens, keys, electronics – it took quite a beating!

Maybe all the bells and whistles on this bag will save you too 😀 The outside has a big Union Jack decoration because I can’t stop watching British TV :B The bottom uses vinyl so it’s a bit more durable and resilient against moisture. And instead of a strap adjuster, it uses a belt buckle for an unusual touch (also because I ran out of strap adjusters XD).

It should be noted that since I’m busting my scrap stash, you’ll find that I used a lot of accent fabrics for different parts of the bag, but in the pattern I boiled them down to just outer fabrics and lining fabrics. The pictures should make it clear what’s what of course, but if you want to get the exact look that I did, read through the instructions first before cutting your fabric and I’ll tell you when I deviated from the main pattern.

At 51 steps, this is easily my longest project yet x_x I read over it several times to make sure there weren’t any errors, but since it is a free project it I can’t guarantee that it’s foolproof. Do let me know if you run into any snafus as you work so I can make fixes for the next brave sewist!

Freebie Friday! The Big Shopping Bag

Prj066

I’ve been putting off this project for a long while now, which is so silly! For quite some time now I’ve needed a few new reusable shopping bags to bring along with me to the grocery store and whatnot. I have a few of the store-bought kind that were given to me as prizes, promotions, etc., but I really needed something a lot bigger to fully round out my collection and handle some of the bigger things I buy.

I don’t know why I put off making one for so long, seeing as how I had plenty of fabric and it would have gone quickly. But I finally decided no more procrastinating. I figured if I was going to take the project seriously I would take the bag a bit more seriously too. The main body of the bag is quilting cotton reinforced with some quilt batting, but the sides and bottom are vinyl for extra strength and so I don’t have to worry about the cotton getting dirty. The handles go all the way down the side of the bag so they’re held on strongly, and they’re extra wide so they don’t cut into your shoulder when you’re carrying something heavy. I’ve found that this thing can tackle even the biggest jugs of milk or detergent that I buy from the wholesale club :B

Freebie Friday! Kitty Purse

Prj062

This project came about because I realized I needed a purse that was a little more suitable for professional occasions, so I thought I would try making up a cute pattern that was a little on the subdued. I’m not quite sure if I got exactly to that mix of professional with subtle cute, but it was fun trying nonetheless! I used some extra corduroy to make this particular purse, and I think the dark reddish brown does a good job of looking stylish without being too over the top.

For this particular project I tried out a lot of new interfacing to see how it stacks up for stabilizing thin corduroy. You could leave it out as you prefer, of course, but I think the Pellon 50 I used did a good job of making thin corduroy into something more substantial. The lining includes several side pockets as well as a hidden zippered pocket. I ran out of strap adjusters by this point, so I tried out using a buckle instead. A little unorthodox, but I think I like it! Maybe you will too 😀

Freebie Friday! Gato Bag

Prj058

Okay, I have to admit this project is a little obscure XD It’s a present for my amazingly talented best friend; she loves Chrono Trigger, especially the character Lucca. In the game, Gato (Gonzalez in the Japanese version) is a singing robot that provides a little challenge at the beginning of the game. Since Lucca already carries around a blue bag, my friend came up with the design to make it Gato themed instead (though Gato is usually red) x3 I imagine she’ll probably use it if she dresses up as Lucca for Halloween or another party ^-^ If you’ve ever heard of the old SNES RPG I would definitely recommend it x3 it’s certainly one of the many all-time classics out there.

As for the bag, it’s a pretty standard messenger bag, so if you’re looking for that you can simply skip all the additional appliqué and cat ears that make this like the aforementioned robot; it takes the number of steps down a decent bit. I also particularly love how his eyes turned out. They were done with just a bit of fabric paint to give them that glowing effect. Maybe you all might find another application for the technique!

Freebie Friday! The Battie Treat Bag

Prj047
Another Halloween treat for you all! This time it’s directed mostly at the kiddies ^-^ I had some scraps of black twill that I thought would work perfectly for a little treat bag. Lots of different animal options came to mind, but a cute little bat enamored me the most. Now your favorite vampire or witch will be completely set for Halloween!
The bag is just a simple bucket bag style, but the added wings, ears, and appliqué make it perfect for any little vampires or witches out there. Or you could leave off the handle and use it for handing out candy this year 😀
