Throwback Thursday plus New Mini Sushi Pattern!

Three years ago when my blog was way in its infancy I launched the Monthly Crafting Challenge with a set of 13 sushi plushies 😀 I still look back on them fondly because they felt like the perfect little patterns to get things going. Simple, varied, and so very loveable. I felt inclined to go back and give them a reboot – not only to redo them in nicer fabrics and freshen up their look, but also to expand the idea further.

I redid the most popular designs in minky, made the faces much larger and brighter, and of course improved the pattern so the directions are much more detailed 😀 I had a lot of fans over the years tell me they made the whole set to give as an impressive gift to friends and family. I imagine they must have been show stoppers since each plush is about handheld size. That’s why I got inspired to do a set of mini plushies, complete with wooden tray or bento box for display! They’d make incredible gifts for any sushi lovers out there.

These new patterns are now available in my shop! It includes a whole set featuring nigiri sushi, wasabi, ginger, maki roll, sushi tray, and bento box pattern.

New Crafting Challenge pattern for November!

Hello all!
I hope everyone had an amazing Halloween yesterday! I spent a lot of it sewing in front of the TV, watching silly scary movies and eating mouthfuls of York Peppermint Patties 😀 It’s so nice to move into another month and get one step closer to winter – or the closest thing we have to winter down here in Florida. I wasn’t very active here on the blog during October because of all the Halloween orders I was filling. It was a ton of fun getting to make others’ costumes, but hopefully this month I can move into making some more personal projects!

To kick off November I have a new plush pattern you can earn!
201511
A Chocolate Gato!

This pun is multilingual again ^-^ and I love it! It’s based of the Spanish word for cat: gato, and the French word for cake: gâteau – which sound very similar. So together it’s a petit little cake with an adorable kitty head popping out the top. Little icing roses in brown and red finish it off.
Sewing up the cake and the kitty head are pretty simple, but putting it all together takes a lot of hand sewing, so just be prepared for that ^-^ It might be a pain to position everything just right, so basting the pieces in place first before going back and doing the real seams can be a big help.

New Monthly Crafting Challenge Pattern for September!

Hi everybody!

August has been super busy for me! 😀 I’ve been gearing up for my favorite holiday, Halloween ^w^ so you should see some updates in my Etsy store now and in the coming weeks. I’m also working on some projects for myself, friends, and family, so I’ll be sharing those with you in the future too! Also super exciting – I’ve surpassed 2,000 subscribers on this blog! So thank you to all my wonderful fans out there ;0; I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you! Stay tuned next week — I’ll be holding a giveaway to celebrate this new milestone! ♥

But I’m sure your minds are all on more important matters, that’s right, plushies ¬w¬ For the month of September here’s the new pattern you can earn!
201509
A Panda Loaf!

This little project is simple but sweet 😀 The pun is based off the fact that the ‘pan’ in panda means bread in lots of different languages like Spanish, Japanese, and more loosely Italian and French. I was inspired a lot by the Sanrio character, Pankunchi :3 A little panda that hates bamboo but loves eating bread. So together we have a big plush breadloaf with panda features!
Assembling the loaf is pretty simple ^-^ There are some curved seams to worry about in sewing up the front and back, but overall it’s a basic shape 😀

New Freebie Plush Pattern for March!

Hello everyone!

I hope you all are having a good year so far! I can’t believe we’re already in March 😀 I’ve been chugging along with book edits and updating my Etsy store for the past month. For March I’ll be fulfilling orders for all the new aviator hats and hoodies I’ve been selling to you wonderful folks, but hopefully in my off time I can work on some more stash-busting projects to share with you all! ^-^

To get to the heart of the matter, though. I’m still going strong with the punny food animal theme for this year’s Monthly Crafting Challenge! January was a Cinnabunny plush, February had a Red Velvet Cupkit, and for March it’s…

201503

Chick Peas!

This food animal pun is kind of a classic, but I just couldn’t resist making it, because what else is cuter for spring than a couple of bright yellow chicks in a pea pod? Also I believe March covers part of the season for chick peas, so that’s a nice plus as well ^-~ I had a lot of fun putting these together x3 Each chick is about the size of an orange, so their wings, beaks, and feet are so tiny! But once you get them all basted in place, the rest of the chick comes together quite nicely. And the pouch is a ton of fun to come together as well, especially once you get to stuff the chicks inside xD

Holiday2014

But onto more important matters! The last of the 2014 Monthly Crafting Challenge patterns! It’s such a bittersweet sendoff this month, because I saved my favorite pattern for last but I’m also sad to see my collection of Japanese snack foods end :< I’ll try to keep looking ahead to next year and get excited about that however ^-^ I just hope you all love this last pattern as much as I do!
The pattern for this month is a stuffed kitty donut!

201412E

These aren’t a traditional Japanese food at all, in case you can’t tell :3 But all I know is for the past year I’ve seen these adorable pictures of donuts from Japanese bakeries frosted to look like little kitties (amongst other animals). Where each face is delicately painted on with frosting and the ears are formed with more icing. I fell in love at first sight and had to make a plush version.

Kitty Donuts

I have yet to see any bake shops on this side of the world give it a try, so for now I’ll have to settle for stuffed versions if I don’t try to make it myself 😀

You can get the pattern for this plush by signing up for email updates (found in the submission box on the right side of the page below the search bar). New Freebie for November!

Hello everyone out there! A lot’s happened in October ^0^ I’m sure you’ve seen I’ve been working through my stash of minky fabrics and making loads of plushies. I’m working color by color, so I’ve got a group of green, orange, and blue creations so far, and the next time I update you all should see a family of yellow and purple softies 😀

Now that it’s November, it means the 2014 Monthly Crafting Challenge is almost about to come to a close :< It’s been a great year with soo many wonderful submissions. Just like last year I saved my favorite pattern for last, and I’m starting to plan things out for 2015! I have some ideas myself, but if you have a theme you want to throw out there I’d love to hear it in the comments!

But anyway, onto the fun stuff! The free pattern for this month is this little Dorayaki plush!
201411E

Dorayaki are another kind of Japanese confection, it’s two pancake-like patties made from castellan with red bean paste in the middle. They’re also the favorite food of a classic kid’s cartoon character named Doraemon x3 I’ve had these once at a little Japanese wagashi shop when I went on vacation in Manhattan. They were very tasty and I can’t wait to try other sweets like them. Even if you aren’t crazy about the traditional look yourself, this pattern would be perfect for any kind of sandwich-like food. Ice cream sandwiches, Oreos, jam filled cookies, you name it! Just swap out the colors and maybe add some beads for sprinkles or chocolate chips ^-^

You can get the pattern for this plush by signing up for email updates (found in the submission box on the right side of the page below the search bar). If you have trouble signing up, you can check out more info at the main Monthly Crafting Challenge page, the FAQ, or by emailing me. New Freebie for October!

Hello, internet land!

Are you all enjoying the start of fall? I know I am 😀 I’m so glad it’s finally October. I’m working on a lot of projects that I’m hoping to share with you in the coming weeks, and the weather down here in Florida is slowly getting more bearable.

Last week I had another giveaway for my Nyan-Cat Quilt to celebrate a pageview milestone that went really well! Looking at the numbers, it might be a little while before the next giveaway, so at least it will give me a good long time to come up with something great to give away! Here are the stats:
DeviantArt pageviews: 124,969/150,000 = 83%
DeviantArt watchers: 4,396/5,000 = 88%
Facebook likes: 1,457/2,000 = 73%
Tumblr followers: 759/1,000 = 76%
Wordpress followers: 1,385/2,000 = 69%

But onto the patterns! The newest free pattern I’m giving away for October is this little Shrimp Tempura Plush!
201410D

This one is really simple but classic – just a little plush made to look like a plump tempura shrimp. I’m most of us have had tempura or at least fried shrimp at some point. Of course tempura is a bit different because it uses a completely different batter that, when fried perfectly, results in a finish that’s perfectly crispy and non-greasy. I know in my personal culinary efforts I have yet to perfect my deep frying technique, so I know it’s something I’ll have to keep trying at x3

You can get the pattern for this plush by signing up for email updates (found in the submission box on the right side of the page below the search bar). If you have trouble signing up, you can check out more info at the main Monthly Crafting Challenge page, the FAQ, or by emailing me. Also, bonus! for today only I’m offering both this pattern and the one from September when you sign up. After today though, the prize is just this guy 🙂 Though you can also purchase the older pattern through my Etsy if you’re too late.

If you’ve already signed up for emails, that’s where the challenge comes in. You can get this pattern if you make one of the projects from this blog, my books, or my Etsy then email me or message the finished project to my Facebook where I have a really awesome collection going of your creations! Keep it up every month and you’ll get a new free pattern, so don’t forget to check back during November to see the newest creation!
