Holiday2014

But onto more important matters! The last of the 2014 Monthly Crafting Challenge patterns! It’s such a bittersweet sendoff this month, because I saved my favorite pattern for last but I’m also sad to see my collection of Japanese snack foods end :< I’ll try to keep looking ahead to next year and get excited about that however ^-^ I just hope you all love this last pattern as much as I do!
The pattern for this month is a stuffed kitty donut!

201412E

These aren’t a traditional Japanese food at all, in case you can’t tell :3 But all I know is for the past year I’ve seen these adorable pictures of donuts from Japanese bakeries frosted to look like little kitties (amongst other animals). Where each face is delicately painted on with frosting and the ears are formed with more icing. I fell in love at first sight and had to make a plush version.

Kitty Donuts

I have yet to see any bake shops on this side of the world give it a try, so for now I’ll have to settle for stuffed versions if I don’t try to make it myself 😀

You can get the pattern for this plush by signing up for email updates (found in the submission box on the right side of the page below the search bar). If you have trouble signing up, you can check out more info at the main Monthly Crafting Challenge page, the FAQ, or by emailing me. Also, bonus! for today only I’m offering both this pattern and the one from November when you sign up. New Freebie for November!

Hello everyone out there! A lot’s happened in October ^0^ I’m sure you’ve seen I’ve been working through my stash of minky fabrics and making loads of plushies. I’m working color by color, so I’ve got a group of green, orange, and blue creations so far, and the next time I update you all should see a family of yellow and purple softies 😀

Now that it’s November, it means the 2014 Monthly Crafting Challenge is almost about to come to a close :< It’s been a great year with soo many wonderful submissions. Just like last year I saved my favorite pattern for last, and I’m starting to plan things out for 2015! I have some ideas myself, but if you have a theme you want to throw out there I’d love to hear it in the comments!

But anyway, onto the fun stuff! The free pattern for this month is this little Dorayaki plush!
201411E

Dorayaki are another kind of Japanese confection, it’s two pancake-like patties made from castellan with red bean paste in the middle. They’re also the favorite food of a classic kid’s cartoon character named Doraemon x3 I’ve had these once at a little Japanese wagashi shop when I went on vacation in Manhattan. They were very tasty and I can’t wait to try other sweets like them. Even if you aren’t crazy about the traditional look yourself, this pattern would be perfect for any kind of sandwich-like food. Ice cream sandwiches, Oreos, jam filled cookies, you name it! Just swap out the colors and maybe add some beads for sprinkles or chocolate chips ^-^

You can get the pattern for this plush by signing up for email updates (found in the submission box on the right side of the page below the search bar). If you have trouble signing up, you can check out more info at the main Monthly Crafting Challenge page, the FAQ, or by emailing me. Also, bonus! for today only I’m offering both this pattern and the one from October when you sign up. After today though, the prize is just this guy 🙂 Though you can also purchase the older pattern through my Etsy if you’re too late.

If you’ve already signed up for emails, that’s where the challenge comes in. You can get this pattern if you make one of the projects from this blog, my books, or my Etsy then email me or message the finished project to my Facebook where I have a really awesome collection going of your creations! New Freebie for October!

Hello, internet land!

Are you all enjoying the start of fall? I know I am 😀 I’m so glad it’s finally October. I’m working on a lot of projects that I’m hoping to share with you in the coming weeks, and the weather down here in Florida is slowly getting more bearable.

Last week I had another giveaway for my Nyan-Cat Quilt to celebrate a pageview milestone that went really well! Looking at the numbers, it might be a little while before the next giveaway, so at least it will give me a good long time to come up with something great to give away! Here are the stats:
DeviantArt pageviews: 124,969/150,000 = 83%
DeviantArt watchers: 4,396/5,000 = 88%
Facebook likes: 1,457/2,000 = 73%
Tumblr followers: 759/1,000 = 76%
Wordpress followers: 1,385/2,000 = 69%

But onto the patterns! The newest free pattern I’m giving away for October is this little Shrimp Tempura Plush!
201410D

This one is really simple but classic – just a little plush made to look like a plump tempura shrimp. I’m most of us have had tempura or at least fried shrimp at some point. Of course tempura is a bit different because it uses a completely different batter that, when fried perfectly, results in a finish that’s perfectly crispy and non-greasy. I know in my personal culinary efforts I have yet to perfect my deep frying technique, so I know it’s something I’ll have to keep trying at x3

You can get the pattern for this plush by signing up for email updates (found in the submission box on the right side of the page below the search bar). If you have trouble signing up, you can check out more info at the main Monthly Crafting Challenge page, the FAQ, or by emailing me. Also, bonus! for today only I’m offering both this pattern and the one from September when you sign up.

Keep it up every month and you’ll get a new free pattern, so don’t forget to check back during November to see the newest creation!

New Freebie for September!

Hello everyone!

September’s just begun, and I have to say it couldn’t come soon enough after the muggy and sweltering Florida summer over here x3 I’m very much looking forward to autumn, especially since my semi-hiatus has ended and I’m able to post more often 😀 As you might have seen from what I’ve been posting, I’m currently working on bringing down my stash of quilting cottons, so be prepared for lots of patchwork-centric kind of projects. I’m also painfully close to another social media milestone! Namely, my DeviantArt page views. So before you know I should be starting up another giveaway! Here’s what the numbers look like:

DeviantArt pageviews: 121,930/123,456 = 99%
DeviantArt watchers: 4,329/5,000 = 87%
Facebook likes: 1,429/2,000 = 71%
Tumblr followers: 752/1,000 = 75%
Wordpress followers: 1,328/2,000 = 66%

But now for the fun part; a new plush pattern for my Monthly Crafting Challenge! This month for September is a little plush taiyaki fish!
201409E

I knew a pattern like this had to be part of my collection from the get go, so I’m glad I’m finally able to introduce it! Taiyaki (literally, “baked sea bream”) is a little fish-shaped cake that’s usually filled with sweet red bean paste, custard, chocolate, or sweet potato. Savory versions are also popular and are filled with gyoza filling and other similar foods. It’s cooked just like a waffle really, from a special molded pan that has the fish shape on each side. The pink version can sometimes be seen when particular confectionery experts color the batter to make it look especially cute like that. It’s common to see taiyaki being made at school festivals or food trucks in Japan, so, sadly, I’ve never personally had one. It’s definitely on my gastronomic bucket list though, and for now I’ll have to enjoy the plush version instead ^-^

You can get the pattern for this plush by signing up for email updates (found in the submission box on the right side of the page below the search bar). If you have trouble signing up, you can check out more info at the main Monthly Crafting Challenge page, the FAQ, or by emailing me. Also, bonus! for today only I’m offering both this pattern and the one from August when you sign up.

Keep it up every month and you’ll get a new free pattern, so don’t forget to check back during October to see the newest creation!

New Freebie for August!

Hi everyone out there in internet land!

It’s August already, so it’s time for a little update on how things have been ^-^ Looking back, I can’t believe so much of the year has passed already. Needless to say, I’ve been away on this semi-hiatus of sorts, only posting about once or twice a month, and that’s been due to all the books I’ve been writing! I’ve let you know about Bling it Up! already, but I should have more books releasing in the coming months, so I’ll be sure to post about that. Now with Metrocon over I’m taking a little break to work on the kind of things that started this whole blog – namely trying out new project ideas to bring down my fabric collection and sharing the tutorials with you! Stay tuned in the next few weeks and you should be seeing a bit of a comeback from me 😀

I’m also getting pretty close to my next giveaway goal, which will be when I hit a kiriban for my DeviantArt pageviews ^-^ Can’t say I’m surprised; my DeviantArt fans are some my best fans! You guys are awesome!
DeviantArt pageviews: 115,638/123,456 = 94%
DeviantArt watchers: 4,286/5,000 = 86%
Facebook likes: 1,405/2,000 = 70%
Tumblr followers: 752/1,000 = 75%
Wordpress followers: 1,288/2,000 = 64%

But now the real reason why we’re here; a new plush pattern for my Monthly Crafting Challenge! This month for August is a little plush square watermelon with matching basket!

201408E

Even though this pattern is quite basic, I just love the finished look x3 Many of you might know about the square watermelons that are grown in Japan – they cost a lot more money to buy, but they’re popular due to the novelty of them and that they fit perfectly in tiny Japanese refrigerators. I knew the moment I had the idea that I wanted the plush to show the adorable pink flesh with seeds, but there wasn’t really a way to make it work while still showing the full plush cube. Hence the basket option! It kind of resembles the carved watermelons seen at fancy catered brunches, but nevertheless it has a bright pink interior and you can use it to store your other plush creations or something :3

You can get the pattern for this plush by signing up for email updates (found in the submission box on the right side of the page below the search bar). If you have trouble signing up, you can check out more info at the main Monthly Crafting Challenge page, the FAQ, or by emailing me. Also, bonus! for today only I’m offering both this pattern and the one from July when you sign up.
New Freebie for July!

Hello everyone!
Wow, I can’t believe it’s already July! June was a real whirlwind for me, between preparing for Metrocon in a just over a week and running the aviator cap giveaway to celebrate 100K pageviews on DeviantArt ^-^ The giveaway went fantastically thanks to all of you and Metrocon is still on the horizon, so it’s no wonder I barely remember anything from June x3 While I’m on the subject, you all should know that while I’ll be attending Metrocon in Tampa, I’ll be taking all of the physical stock from my Etsy store with me. I’ll be leaving up the listings for .pdf patterns, since those allow instant download. So if there was anything you wanted to order from my shop, now would be the best time to jump on it before it gets sold in Tampa!

It also looks like it won’t be too much longer before I’ve got another giveaway going! I’m incredibly close to my next pageview goal; it’s probably my own fault for picking such a small goal, but I couldn’t resist the number :B
DeviantArt pageviews: 110,940/123,456 = 90%
DeviantArt watchers: 4,258/5,000 = 85%
Facebook likes: 1,380/2,000 = 69%
Tumblr followers: 755/1,000 = 76%
Wordpress followers: 1,269/2,000 = 63%

Onto the fun part, though! The next leg of the monthly crafting challenge! This month’s prize is for a fat little takoyaki plush ^0^
201407E

This one is definitely one of my favorite patterns of the bunch ^w^ Takoyaki are little fried balls of batter, filled with a bit of octopus. The finished ball is slathered in sauce, then topped with various things like bonito flakes. The real deal doesn’t have octopus legs like these guys, but what better way is there to show what’s inside these adorable and delicious balls of dough?
I’ve only had takoyaki at my local Japanese restaurant so far; they’re quite delicious though I hope to try the real thing in Japan one day. However, making them for myself might also be in the cards, since a few months ago I scored a $3 cast iron aebleskiver pan (the kind used to make Danish filled pancakes – I hear the pan works perfectly for takoyaki too) at Goodwill – I’m pretty proud of that find :3

You can get the pattern for this plush by signing up for email updates (found in the submission box on the right side of the page below the search bar). If you have trouble signing up, you can check out more info at the main Monthly Crafting Challenge page, the FAQ, or by emailing me. Also, bonus! for today only I’m offering both this pattern and the one from June when you sign up. After today though, the prize is just this guy 🙂 Though you can also purchase the older pattern through my Etsy if you’re too late.

New Freebie for June!

Hello out there!
May really went by in a flash for me 😀 I don’t know about the rest of you, but it’s great nonetheless because there are a few new things going on!
First off, thanks to all of you awesome fans, I’ve reached over 100k pageviews on DeviantArt! I’m going to celebrate with a brand new giveaway starting tomorrow morning, so be sure to check that out! In the meantime, have a look at this teaser photo of the prize :3

Giveaway Teaser

The next giveaway might not be too far off either ^-^ Looks like I’ll be reaching my next goal of 4k watchers on DeviantArt quite soon too!
DeviantArt pageviews: 100,149/123,456 = 81%
DeviantArt watchers: 3,658/4,000 = 91%
Facebook likes: 1,299/2,000 = 65%
Tumblr followers: 759/1,000 = 76%
Wordpress followers: 1,244/2,000 = 62%

Of course the next leg of the Monthly Crafting Challenge is also on the table! The new prize this month is the Umeboshi Onigiri plush!

201406D

I’ve made an onigiri plush before, but I felt compelled to try a different kind this time that has a slightly different shape. Most onigiri have some kind of special filling inside – this one in particular has an umeboshi, which is a pickled plum. I haven’t had one before, but I hope to try one someday ^-^ You could easily adapt this pattern to make other fillings or other faces to match whatever you had in mind since the original shape of the onigiri I think is so adorable!

You can get the pattern for this plush by signing up for email updates (found in the submission box on the right side of the page below the search bar). If you have trouble signing up, you can check out more info at the main Monthly Crafting Challenge page, the FAQ, or by emailing me. Also, bonus! for today only I’m offering both this pattern and the one from May when you sign up.

Keep it up every month and you’ll get a new free pattern, so don’t forget to check back during July to see the newest creation!

New Freebie for May!

Hi everyone!
As usual I’ve been pretty nonexistent on the internet, but I still make time to provide updates for the Monthly Crafting Challenge! With any luck you should also be hearing from me again about a new giveaway and getting to see some of the projects I’ve been working on all this time I’ve been on semi-hiatus!

Here’s how my stats look – I’m extremely close to my next giveaway goal! Once I reach my 100k pageview kiriban (milestone) on DeviantArt, I’ll start up the next giveaway ^0^
DeviantArt pageviews: 97,778/100,000 = 98% (almost there!)
DeviantArt watchers: 3,619/4,000 = 90%
Facebook likes: 1,257/2,000 = 63%
Tumblr followers: 762/1,000 = 76%
Wordpress followers: 1,227/2,000 = 61%
I’m thinking at this rate I should be able to do another giveaway around June-ish, so be sure to check back into hear news about that 😀 However, you can always speed up the process by visiting my DeviantArt page if you haven’t already ^-^

On to the good stuff, though! The new Monthly Crafting Challenge prize for May is this chubby little Usagi Manju plush!

201405D

I don’t know as much about these sweet buns as other Japanese foods, but I couldn’t resist making them because they’re so adorable! I haven’t seen them personally in any Japanese confection shops I’ve been to, but from what I can gather, they’re a steamed bun that’s typically filled with sweet red bean paste. The rabbit features are usually painted with natural food dyes or sculpted from other garnishes. The rabbit theme makes it popular for both moon viewing festivals and festivals during the Year of the Rabbit (which won’t be until 2023 :<). You’ll find this adorable shape not only in this particular kind of filled sweet, but in bread buns and other confections as well!

You can get the pattern for this plush by signing up for email updates (found in the submission box on the right side of the page below the search bar). If you have trouble signing up, you can check out more info at the main Monthly Crafting Challenge page, the FAQ, or by emailing me. Also, bonus! for today only I’m offering both this pattern and the one from April when you sign up.

Keep it up every month and you’ll get a new free pattern, so don’t forget to check back during June to see the newest creation!

New Freebie for April!

Happy April, everyone! Don’t worry, I don’t have any kind of April Fool’s prank up my sleeve. Another busy month has come and gone with lots of new things on the horizon. Now might be a good time to mention that (just like for the past 10+ years) I’ll be attending Metrocon in Tampa, FL! 😀 I have some new products that I plan to develop and bring there, so I’ll let you know more about that as things develop.

Now that a few months have passed, I’m also getting really close to my next giveaway goal! Here’s how my stats look:
DeviantArt pageviews: 95,738/100,000 = 96% (almost there!)
DeviantArt watchers: 3,599/4,000 = 90%
Facebook likes: 1,249/2,000 = 62%
Tumblr followers: 762/1,000 = 76%
Wordpress followers: 1,214/2,000 = 61%
I’m thinking at this rate I should be able to do another giveaway around June-ish, but you can always speed up the process by visiting my Deviantart page if you haven’t already ^-^

But of course the main reason I’m here is to launch the new Monthly Crafting Challenge plush for April! And that’s this little dango plush!

201404D

Dango are a kind of Japanese sweet dumpling very similar to mochi, but served on a skewer and prepared different ways depending on the season. The ones you see here are modeled after Hanami dango, which are colored appropriately for the flower viewing season 😀 Others are sometimes grilled, covered in sweet syrupy sauce, or flavored with red beans. This is another kind of Japanese treat that I have yet to try, but they are definitely fun to sew up! If they’re like mochi, as they say, I’m sure I’ll love them.

You can get the pattern for this plush by signing up for email updates (found in the submission box on the right side of the page below the search bar). If you have trouble signing up, you can check out more info at the main Monthly Crafting Challenge page, the FAQ, or by emailing me. Also, bonus! for today only I’m offering both this pattern and the one from March when you sign up.

Keep it up every month and you’ll get a new free pattern, so don’t forget to check back during May to see the newest creation!

New Freebie for March!

Wow! I can’t believe it’s already March xD I know February is a short month, but it really flew by for me. On the bright side, I’m getting ever closer to finally catching up on all the work that’s been slowing down my posting. It won’t be long now, and getting to launch the new Monthly Crafting Challenge pattern for March is just a lovely reminder ^0^

As far as giveaways are concerned, it still might be a while yet before I’m close, as I’m only at 93,000 (out of 100k) pageviews on my Deviantart, but it’s definitely going to be the goal that comes up next 😀

I’ve also created a brand new FAQ for the Monthly Crafting Challenge 😀 I’ve been getting a lot of questions about some of the specifics of the challenge, so if parts of it have you confused, hopefully the FAQ will help!

But to get to the heart of the matter – the new prize for March is this fat little nikuman plush!
201403E

Nikuman in Japanese just means meat bun, which is exactly what these are 😀 They’re steamed buns made from a soft yeast dough and filled with meat – typically pork or chicken with some vegetables. I’ve personally have yet to eat what people call the best nikuman – that is the ones that usually come from street cart vendors in an Asian part of town. So for the time being I’ve only made my own — I haven’t quite got it perfect yet, but it’s been fun trying!

This particular plush was a lot of fun to make – while it looks like the typical kind of sphere shape, this plush has the trademark little pointed top where one would pinch the top of the meat bun after filling it. It felt like the buns just had to have that to call them a nikuman 😀 Also, they’re a little bigger than my usual plushies, which felt necessary in this case ^0^ they’re nice big handfuls like the kind you see characters eat in anime.

You can get the pattern for this plush by signing up for email updates (found in the submission box on the right side of the page below the search bar). If you have trouble signing up, you can check out more info at the main Monthly Crafting Challenge page, or by emailing me. Also, bonus! for today only I’m offering both this pattern and the one from February when you sign up.

Keep it up every month and you’ll get a new free pattern, so don’t forget to check back during April to see the newest creation! And if you’re still a little confused about the whole setup, check out the new FAQ and maybe it’ll clear things up for you!
