New Crafting Challenge Pattern for November!

Hi everybody!
Wow! I can’t believe it’s November already. I really missed October going by so soon, but I’m also excited about November and the promise of fall weather and some holiday shopping. I hope you all have been having a good autumn season as well! I have lots of fun projects planned for the rest of the year and even a few leading into the new year ❤ But first things first is the next monthly crafting challenge pattern!

201611
A Peryton!
Deer and stags are a common theme in legendary tales and stories, but I knew if did a deer there wouldn’t be much to set it apart from the regular woodland animal. It was with the help of you all that suggested a Peryton that made this possible! By suggesting this hybrid bird/deer I could make a cute deer plush with that mythic spin. Perytons are first mentioned in the Book of Imaginary Beings as a winged deer or bird/deer hybrid. Some variations have bird hind-quarters, but I stuck with the all-deer body for ease. Instead you have your choice of classic deer ears and tail or feathered ones for that extra bird-like touch.

As for difficulty: like with my other ‘beanie’ style plushies, this one has a head that’s sewn on by hand into the crook of the front legs. So that’s a little tricky to do. There’s also some optional top-stitching done on the wings, ears, and tail that add more depth to the plush. With all that in mind, I gave it a 4/10 stars in difficulty.

New MCC Challenge for October!

Hi everybody!
It’s officially October, and perhaps my favorite part of the year 😀 Since that means Halloween, fall, and costumes! I have some Halloween-themed projects to share this month in addition to this month’s challenge pattern. I hope you all like it!

201610
A Werewolf!

When I planned for the theme of this year’s challenge, I wasn’t quite sure I wanted to include many monsters. After all I tend to go with a cute theme 🙂 But I figured a werewolf could easily be made super cute, and it’s perfect for October of course! I wanted these cuties to look extra scraggly, so they have spiky fur tufts on the sides of their heads, a spiky collar, and spiky tails as well. Big adorable feet finish them off 😀

As for difficulty: the head and feet are sewn on by hand so some dexterity and skill in positioning is helpful. The collar and tail have very sharp corners to make the spikes, so it helps to have some experience with sewing points. With all that in mind, I gave it a 4/10 stars in difficulty.

New Crafting Challenge Pattern for September!

Hey everyone!
Wow! It’s already September! The rest of the year is just flying by 😀 But it’s been a great one so far. I’ve had so much fun designing all of the legendary creatures for this year. I can’t believe it’s nearly over. But on the bright side, October is coming up, and that means Halloween! I have so much planned for that I can’t wait!

But! Onto more plushie related business! There’s a new pattern to be had – and I’m sure many of your were eagerly awaiting for it…
201609
A Unicorn! (and Pegasus, technically)

I know a lot of your were requesting one or both of these guys 🙂 And goodness knows I had it planned from the get go – you can’t skip unicorns! I had to make sure that had my own chibi simple spin on them so they fit with the group and don’t venture into My Little Pony territory. They have detailed wings, a cute little mane and tail, and (probably my favorite), brightly lashed eyes.

As for difficulty, once again the head is sewn on by hand, so some dexterity and skill in positioning is helpful. The mane is sewn into the back seam of the head and even creeps into the front of the head as well. So you’ll be sewing some opposing curved edges, which is a little tricky. Also the ‘hooves’ are very tiny circles. That’s a little tough to sew on machine, but you could also do it by hand. With all that in mind, I gave it a 4/10 stars in difficulty.

If you’re NEW to this site, this pattern is my one time only FREE gift to you! Just submit your email address to subscribe to my blog between now and September 30th (found in the submission box on the right sidebar above “My Books”). This will earn you the pattern ONE TIME for THIS MONTH ONLY.

If you think you can’t make anything this month, you’re in for an extra treat! I wanted to include more of the many equine creatures found in fairy tales and folklore, so I added them to the paid pattern. It’s ready for purchase on my Etsy for a very low price. And you can use coupon code MCC2016 for an extra $1 off.

In it you’ll find two extra equine creatures: a kelpie and hippocampus. That is a horse creature with a fish tail – either with a fish dorsal fin or wings. It makes it quite the huge pattern, and it’s only available as part of the paid collection!

New Crafting Challenge Pattern for August!

Hey everyone!
Another month has just flown by! I can’t believe we’re already in August, but it’s been a great few months so far 🙂 I’ve worked on a lot of fun projects that I’ve been able to share with you all, and I have even more crazy stuff for later in the year.

In the meantime though, there’s a new monthly crafting challenge creature! Classic monster lovers should get a kick out of this one…
201608
A Bigfoot/Yeti combo!

This felt like another no-brainer creature – what would a legendary creature collection be like without a Sasquatch? Of course I did something Yeti-themed last year, but this gave me a chance to put a different spin on them, which was a lot of fun. They have huge round bodies and surprisingly expressive arms, haha. And of course big old feet. You can do yours with ears or horns or both, really. I think they look great as an ape-like creature or just a monster creature in general. It’s a very versatile and customizable shape.

As for difficulty, the arms are sewn in the side with a double pointed dart. So experience in sewing darts would be helpful. The details on the face are also very small since I wanted the finished plush to be similar to the other animals in the collection. Right now he’s sort of a two-handful size at about 6” tall, but it would look awesome at a full huggable size as well! With all that in mind, I gave it a 4/10 stars in difficulty.

New Crafting Challenge Pattern for July!

Hey everyone!
Wow! Half of the year has already gone! I can’t believe we’re halfway through the Monthly Crafting Challenge for 2016. It feels so short and yet there I have so many awesome things to show for it thanks to all your amazing submissions! I hope the next half of the year goes just as well as this first half 😀
This month’s creature is another more obscure one. But it should still be pretty recognizable 🙂

201607
It’s a kitsune!

That is, it’s just the Japanese word for fox 😀 But of course in Japanese culture it means much more than that. From old folk tales to current pop culture, foxes are thought to have mystical powers and the ability to shapeshift into humans. As a fox grows past 100 years it becomes wiser and more powerful. Its tail will split in two and even more as time goes on. Once a fox attains nine tails, it turns white or gold and is the most powerful of all. You can definitely see how this motif has leaked its way into popular anime over the years.

So the pattern includes both variations; a traditional looking fox with orange, white, and black coloring and one big plush tail. The ninetails has solid coloring and nine full tails. The pattern takes a few shortcuts so you don’t actually have to sew nine separate tails, but the finished product gives the illusion 🙂 It’s still more time consuming, but if you want the full effect it’s a nice way to go! The faces are inspired by traditional Japanese fox masks, so they have cute smiling eyes and round eyebrows.

As for difficulty, the traditional fox has a lot of little pieces due to the black accents, so you have to keep track of those. The tails for the ninetails are also a little daunting. Aside from that it’s similar to my other patterns, with some darts, hand-sewing, applique, and other basic skills. I gave it a 4/10 in difficulty for all that 🙂

New Crafting Challenge Pattern for June!

Hey everybody!
We’re fully into summer down here in Florida despite it being only June, but May has been a great month! Working on this month’s pattern was a ton of fun and I got a chance to develop some new projects for later in the year as well. Hopefully those all turn out okay so I have some new and exciting things to show you!

This month is another treat for classic creature lovers…
201606
A Griffin!

You might notice that their body style looks similar to the Dragons I did earlier in February 🙂 This was no accident! I really liked that style and as I was developing these little guys I thought it would make a great fit. It helped to really display the wings, make the chibi claws easier to sew, and, best of all, make it perfect for tossing around for some flying practice. I had so much fun seeing them come together. Between the wings with all the topstitched feather details, to the little ears with a bit of an owlish look, down to the chubby little toes, it was just a blast to make.
I gave this one a 4/10 stars since it has a lot of tiny pieces to sew, a good deal of hand sewing, and just a lot of dexterity and details involved. I don’t think it’s so overwhelming if you take it one step at a time. I hope if you give it a try you’ll agree that it’s worth it 🙂

New Crafting Challenge Pattern for May!

Hi everyone!
Another month has come and gone already! I can’t believe it! It feels like it’ll be another year gone by before you know it. I’ve been working on a lot of new patterns this month in addition to my usual Etsy store creations. I also have a few new features to share in the coming months as well; I’m so excited to see how everything rolls out!

This month’s pattern features another classic creature that I’m sure needs no introduction…
201605
A Phoenix!

Of course with summer well on the way it seems like this legendary bird of flames and rebirth seems appropriate, huh? It has my usual kawaii chibi-fied style with a super big head and little round body. But I’m sure it’s no surprise that my favorite part is the tail. The three sections nestle together and each has a set of three stripes in classic flame colors. You could of course modify this for lots of other beautiful birds as my flaming blue Phoenix shows. The tail takes a bit of time to do, but you could make it easy on yourself and just do a solid colored tail as well. The pattern gives a few tips on how to do that.
I gave this one a 4/10 stars since it doesn’t cover anything too intimidating, but there is a lot to do and many small pieces to keep track of. Like with previous patterns, I’ve labeled everything with a letter so you can keep track of what goes where. I know sometimes in cases like this I keep the paper pattern pinned to the fabric pieces until I need them. I thought I should mention that after taking in some feedback, I’ve done a bit of an overhaul to my current pattern style 🙂 I’ve included a lot more basic sewing information in this current pattern, taken 3x as many photos, and just overall tried to make it more beginner-friendly for those rogue novices that try out intermediate patterns. I hope you all enjoy the new look!

New Crafting Challenge Pattern for April!

Hi everybody!
I hope you all had a great March! Spring is finally in full swing where I am, which is a little unfortunate because cold weather is hard to come by in Florida. I’ve been chugging along this month creating more patterns and tutorials. I feel like I’m really on a roll, lately!

Last month’s Kappa plushies got a lot of love despite being a little more obscure. But you fans out there that enjoy classic monsters are in for a treat 😀 The new pattern I’m unveiling for this month is…

201604
The Loch Ness Monster!

I feel like these little cuties hardly need an introduction; I’m sure you all know about the legendary sea monster that hails from the famous lake in Scotland. How could I even dream of doing a year of legendary creatures without including ol’ Nessie, right? I spent a lot of time perfecting her, since lots of other awesome pattern designers have made their own versions of Nessie and I wanted to be sure mine looked different 🙂 So my Nessie is a good deal tinier and chubbier. Shown is the classic Nessie in sea green and an alternate one with lashed eyes, a contrast belly, and head fins for that little something special.

The one down side to this little girlie is she’s a bit more difficult than other plush patterns I’ve done before. I’ve given it a 5/10. Technically she’s the first pattern I’ve done with a gusset. If you’ve done plushies with gussets before it shouldn’t be too intimidating. If you think you’re ready to try them out, I go through the process very slowly, so with any luck maybe this pattern will help you pick up a new skill! I do think that if you wanted to make the process easier, you could enlarge the pattern 150% or 200% so the seam allowances are larger and it’s easier to be accurate. I’ll see about making up a larger version to show you guys how it might look!

New Crafting Challenge Pattern for March!

Hi everyone!
Despite the extra day this year, February really flew by! I can’t believe it’s already March. I was able to tackle some new projects this month, but I also ended up coming up with more things to do, so I feel more crazy than ever, haha! Has that ever happened to you?
Anyway, the response to the dragon plushies from February’s challenge was huge! I could hardly expect any less since everyone loves dragons 😀 This month’s creature might not be as well known, but let’s hope it still gets some love!

201603
Little kappas!

If you’re a Japanese culture nut like me, you may have already heard of kappas. But for those uninitiated, kappas are turtle-like trickster creatures that live near rivers and lakes. They’re said to kidnap children, and so are a common way of scaring kids into not playing near the water. They love cucumbers, which is why my plush are each holding their own tiny cucumber. The ‘water plate’ on their head always has to stay wet or else they may die. It’s common to see scary and creepy versions of kappa artwork floating around in prints and paintings, but it’s no surprise that Japanese companies have kawaii-fied them like these guys here. I chose to introduce them in March because it’s said kappa travel down from the mountains to the rivers in the springtime.

I think the difficulty on this one is maybe just a smidge less than the dragon from last month, but not by much so I still gave it a 4/10. Sewing on the water plate is a little tricky (though a little easier if you do it by hand — just takes longer), and the head is also sewn on by hand. With all this, it can be difficult to make sure everything is aligned right, so it helps to always pause and get a good look at your work while you sew to make sure nothing has shifted.

New MCC Plush Pattern for February!

Hi everybody!
It looks like 2016 is in full swing with January having come and gone. With the holidays completely behind us it was great to work on more projects for the blog for a change 😀 One of which you’ll get to see shortly! My creative juices have really been flowing, so here’s hoping I can churn out more before I get swamped with other work.
The first crafting challenge pattern for 2016 was such a hit, I’m sure you all are itching to know what the next one is! Well, the second installment in the legendary creatures collection is…

201602
A dragon plush!

I feel like I just had to do this one for February because Chinese New Year is coming up! So this pattern has options for a Western dragon with wings and horns, while the Eastern dragon has antlers and whiskers. I did warn that some of the patterns in this collection would get a little harder, and this one here is a good example. I rated it 4/10 in difficulty, which is higher than usual for my free patterns. There are a lot of little details with the horns, wings, whiskers, etc. that can be difficult to keep track of and sew in place. I put some tips in the pattern to help get through the tougher bits, and the pattern itself breaks everything down into 24 detailed steps, but if you’re still completely new to sewing, you might want to save this one for later 🙂

These guys were definitely tough to design because lots of pattern sellers have their own dragon pattern, so I had to try to make this one unique while still remaining relatively simple. And I couldn’t very well leave it out of the collection! I mean, if I’m doing a set of legendary creatures there’s no way I could skip a dragon, could I? So hopefully this particular design is something you might not have seen before.
