New Freebie for June!

Hello out there!
May really went by in a flash for me 😀 I don’t know about the rest of you, but it’s great nonetheless because there are a few new things going on!
First off, thanks to all of you awesome fans, I’ve reached over 100k pageviews on DeviantArt! I’m going to celebrate with a brand new giveaway starting tomorrow morning, so be sure to check that out! In the meantime, have a look at this teaser photo of the prize :3

Giveaway Teaser

The next giveaway might not be too far off either ^-^ Looks like I’ll be reaching my next goal of 4k watchers on DeviantArt quite soon too!
DeviantArt pageviews: 100,149/123,456 = 81%
DeviantArt watchers: 3,658/4,000 = 91%
Facebook likes: 1,299/2,000 = 65%
Tumblr followers: 759/1,000 = 76%
Wordpress followers: 1,244/2,000 = 62%

Of course the next leg of the Monthly Crafting Challenge is also on the table! The new prize this month is the Umeboshi Onigiri plush!

201406D

I’ve made an onigiri plush before, but I felt compelled to try a different kind this time that has a slightly different shape. Most onigiri have some kind of special filling inside – this one in particular has an umeboshi, which is a pickled plum. I haven’t had one before, but I hope to try one someday ^-^ You could easily adapt this pattern to make other fillings or other faces to match whatever you had in mind since the original shape of the onigiri I think is so adorable!

You can get the pattern for this plush by signing up for email updates (found in the submission box on the right side of the page below the search bar). If you have trouble signing up, you can check out more info at the main Monthly Crafting Challenge page, the FAQ, or by emailing me. Also, bonus! for today only I’m offering both this pattern and the one from May when you sign up. After today though, the prize is just this guy 🙂 Though you can also purchase the older pattern through my Etsy if you’re too late.

If you’ve already signed up for emails, that’s where the challenge comes in. You can get this pattern if you make one of the projects from this blog, my books, or my Etsy then email me or message the finished project to my Facebook where I have a really awesome collection going of your creations! Keep it up every month and you’ll get a new free pattern, so don’t forget to check back during July to see the newest creation!

New Freebie for April!

Happy April, everyone! Don’t worry, I don’t have any kind of April Fool’s prank up my sleeve. Another busy month has come and gone with lots of new things on the horizon. Now might be a good time to mention that (just like for the past 10+ years) I’ll be attending Metrocon in Tampa, FL! 😀 I have some new products that I plan to develop and bring there, so I’ll let you know more about that as things develop.

Now that a few months have passed, I’m also getting really close to my next giveaway goal! Here’s how my stats look:
DeviantArt pageviews: 95,738/100,000 = 96% (almost there!)
DeviantArt watchers: 3,599/4,000 = 90%
Facebook likes: 1,249/2,000 = 62%
Tumblr followers: 762/1,000 = 76%
Wordpress followers: 1,214/2,000 = 61%
I’m thinking at this rate I should be able to do another giveaway around June-ish, but you can always speed up the process by visiting my Deviantart page if you haven’t already ^-^

But of course the main reason I’m here is to launch the new Monthly Crafting Challenge plush for April! And that’s this little dango plush!

201404D

Dango are a kind of Japanese sweet dumpling very similar to mochi, but served on a skewer and prepared different ways depending on the season. The ones you see here are modeled after Hanami dango, which are colored appropriately for the flower viewing season 😀 Others are sometimes grilled, covered in sweet syrupy sauce, or flavored with red beans. This is another kind of Japanese treat that I have yet to try, but they are definitely fun to sew up! If they’re like mochi, as they say, I’m sure I’ll love them.

You can get the pattern for this plush by signing up for email updates (found in the submission box on the right side of the page below the search bar). If you have trouble signing up, you can check out more info at the main Monthly Crafting Challenge page, the FAQ, or by emailing me. Also, bonus! for today only I’m offering both this pattern and the one from March when you sign up.

Keep it up every month and you’ll get a new free pattern, so don’t forget to check back during May to see the newest creation!

1 Year Blogiversary & New Monthly Crafting Challenge!

Happy New Year everyone! Can you believe 2013 is over? I personally can’t believe my blog is 1 year old today! It all started because I wanted a nice little hub for people to come to when they happen upon my books, but I’ve gotten over 1,000 fans over the past year! I can’t thank you all enough! It’s been a blast making things all year and I can’t wait to keep chugging along for another one ^-^

As far as updates go, I still wanted to give a heads up that I won’t be able to post with free patterns every week until a few more months. I’ll should be able to post every month or so, but I’m still catching up on some other work at the moment :3 Hopefully you’ll all be able to see the fruits of my labor soon!

I’m also waiting on when to do my next giveaway, which will probably be when I hit the 100,000 pageview kiriban (milestone) on my DeviantArt. That will likely be a few months down the road, so I’ll make a bigger fuss about it when I get closer :B

The most exciting update, however, is the revealing of the new 2014 Monthly Crafting Challenge!
For 2013 I did a set of 12 sushi plushies and challenged you all to make projects from my books, website, and store to earn more. Over 2013 I received over 60 submissions! Thank you everyone that sent me a picture of their work ^0^ It was such a blast getting to see all the new little projects everyone made, especially those of you who were just learning to sew! And above all, I’m so flattered that people went through the trouble to make my designs ;o; I can’t thank you enough. Keep up the good work, everyone, I can’t wait to see what gets made for 2014!

So for the 2014 collection I’m doing… (drumroll please) Japanese snack foods!
After doing a whole set of sushies, I realized just how many more awesome and delicious Japanese foods I was missing out on that weren’t sushi, so I gathered up a collection of 12 and made plush patterns for each one. Here’s a preview of what you can expect throughout the year! I still want to keep a little element of surprise each month x3 but I couldn’t resist showing off the full collection.

For January, the fun begins with this plush mochi!
201401F

Mochi are a delicious Japanese confection made from sticky rice flour and traditionally eaten on New Year’s! (though they’re tasty all year round). The sticky rice flour is made into a thick elastic dough through rigorous pounding, then the dough is wrapped around a filling such as sweet red beans, strawberry, or ice cream. The finished treat is wonderfully chewy and sweet. I actually made a batch myself over the Christmas holiday — I personally love to fill my mochi with chocolate truffles. This project has a very simple pattern, but all the face options really make it fun. And the best part, I think, is that since mochi often come in loads of different fruit flavors from melon to lemon to green tea, you can make a whole rainbow of plushies!

You can get the pattern for this plush by signing up for email updates (found in the submission box on the right side of the page below the search bar). If you have trouble signing up, you can check out more info at the main Monthly Crafting Challenge page, or by emailing me. Also, bonus! for today only I’m offering both this pattern and the one from December when you sign up.

Keep it up every month and you’ll get a new free pattern, so don’t forget to check back during February to see the newest creation!

New Freebie for May!

Another month has passed, and it feels like a lot has been accomplished! I have nearly 20 free patterns in my stash of sewing tutorials, with many more exciting ones to come! And I also now have over 75 subscribers! So I want to thank you all out there who are following me and my work. Your kind messages and encouragement really help me keep going!

As far as how things are going on my end, I’m still working down to the bottom of my first box of fabric. I’m getting to the part of the stash where I’m in strange fabric territory. Maybe you all know what I mean – I’m talking about those old fabric scraps that just baffle you. They leave you wondering, “Why did I buy this again?” “What could I even do with this?” and “What is this even made of?” As I get to the bottom of my fabric box, it’s clear that I have some items that are less fabric stash and more time capsule x3

But I’ll try my best to make those scraps work in new projects! With some dye, fabric paint, or appliqué, maybe I can make them into something cool 😀

Since it’s the first of the month, that means it’s time for the next leg of my Monthly Crafting Challenge!
The freebie for the month of May is an angry-looking little Urchin Gunkan Sushi Plush!

201305-May

This one is very similar to the Ikura Gunkan plush from February, except with an urchin (also called uni) filling. Sea urchin is a delicacy in many parts of the world that are near the ocean, but the taste is something that many people debate x3 Some find it tastes horribly funky and like dirty ocean water, while others claim it’s sweet and nutty. It’s one of those foods that can differ greatly depending on the quality and freshness of the product, so keep that in mind if you have the guts to try it! Just like the Ikura Gunkan, this sushi emulates a mound of rice, topped with the sushi filling (two pieces of sea urchin), and then wrapped in a sheet of nori to keep it all together.

If you haven’t signed up for emails yet, you can get this little guy along with the freebie for April today only, and after today the prize is just this guy 🙂 Just sign up with the entry box on the side of the screen and I’ll send you the pattern!

So that’s the end of April, it seems 😀 With any luck May will be just as exciting and productive!

New Freebie for April!

Wow! Hard to believe 3 months have gone by already! I feel like I was a lot more productive this month ^-^ I got started on posting some of the knitting patterns I’ve been doing, I have a decent-looking group of 15 free patterns that I’ve cooked up, and my fabric stashes are actually looking significantly smaller! I still have trouble getting the lid on my box of cottons :3 but my heavyweight fabrics actually have some room in the top now 😀 And beyond that, I’ve used up most of the large fabric pieces, so over the next few months I’ll have to start making smaller, daintier projects xD or start getting into some patchwork. Before I know it I’ll completely use up that box of fabric and I’ll get to move onto the next box, I will be vigilant! Just keep sewing, just keep sewing, just keep sewing x3!

But since it’s the first of the month, that means it’s time for the next leg of my Monthly Crafting Challenge!
The freebie for the month of April is a fat little uramaki California roll!

201304-April

The assembly is super simple, and the details really make it look awesome. For the un-sushi-initiated, a California roll is a very American style of sushi, as it doesn’t typically have raw fish. Instead, it’s filled with imitation crab, avocado, cucumber, and sometimes with a bit of fish roe. This one is made inside out, uramaki style, so the seaweed makes a spiral on the inside of the roll. I’d also like to say that he’s a futomaki (thick roll), because he’s so fat (x3!), but those are usually made with nori on the outside.

If you haven’t signed up for emails yet, you can get this little guy along with the freebie for March today only, after that the prize is just this guy 🙂 Just sign up with the entry box on the side of the screen and I’ll send you the pattern!

I guess that about wraps up March. Maybe April will see the end of one box of my fabric stash! Just 4 more to go after that xD!
