Freebie Friday! London Calling Bag

Prj070

This project is quite intensive, because it was one of those passion projects. I’ve been needing a huge bag with loads of pockets to carry every little thing I need when I’m out of the house for a while. It has a large back pocket, zippered front pocket, pockets inside for a sketchbook, pens, and a hidden pocket too 🙂 I used it during my most recent move to Daytona and it really saved me! Holding all that paperwork, pens, keys, electronics – it took quite a beating!

Maybe all the bells and whistles on this bag will save you too 😀 The outside has a big Union Jack decoration because I can’t stop watching British TV :B The bottom uses vinyl so it’s a bit more durable and resilient against moisture. And instead of a strap adjuster, it uses a belt buckle for an unusual touch (also because I ran out of strap adjusters XD).

It should be noted that since I’m busting my scrap stash, you’ll find that I used a lot of accent fabrics for different parts of the bag, but in the pattern I boiled them down to just outer fabrics and lining fabrics. The pictures should make it clear what’s what of course, but if you want to get the exact look that I did, read through the instructions first before cutting your fabric and I’ll tell you when I deviated from the main pattern.

At 51 steps, this is easily my longest project yet x_x I read over it several times to make sure there weren’t any errors, but since it is a free project it I can’t guarantee that it’s foolproof. Do let me know if you run into any snafus as you work so I can make fixes for the next brave sewist!

Freebie Friday! The Boom Box Bag

Prj043A
Prj043B
I’m bringing back more retro technology! x3 I’ve already got the Floppy Disk Coasters and tablet case that looks like an old school Gameboy, now boom boxes get a chance to shine! Ahh, the hours I used to spend recording my favorite songs from the radio while sitting in front of my stereo 🙂 I admit the design looks pretty funky and goofy, but I still like it ^-^ In fact, I made it just for me really. I have a few old reliable messenger bags that I think might be ready to put out to pasture, so I wanted to make sure my newest big bag had all the organization I need to keep things in line.
This bag sports a back zipper pocket, loads of inner pockets, and a detachable shoulder strap so I can switch between carrying in my hand or over my shoulder at will. Of course the front is covered with awesome colorful appliqué, and there’s also decorative piping to give it that extra punch 😀

Freebie Friday! The Engineer’s Pouch

Prj041
I did something a little steampunky again ^-^ It’s nothing to get too excited about, just a little pouch that I thought would work nicely looped through someone’s belt. Last year I made by boyfriend Batman-themed utility pouches that were a ton of fun to sew, so I wanted to dabble in it again. Since I still had lots of leftover brown and gold fabrics, the combination of this little brown pouch with gold gears seemed like a nice fit! I can totally imagine wearing this on my belt to hold my scissors, pins, and measuring tape >w< It features a flap with turn lock closure, two upper loops for going around your belt, and a small gusset on the bottom to give it a bit of extra depth.

Freebie Friday! The Raven Hobo Bag

Prj027
I don’t mean to confuse anyone, but today’s project has nothing to do with birds >w< Many companies give their items cute girl names, for some reason this bag made me think of a raven x3 so I added the dark wings to bring the idea home.

This burgundy denim is leftover from another bag I made some time back, while the contrast black vinyl I had used to make some belts for a costume. The two seemed to go well together in sort of a 90s goth kind of way, so I thought I’d go for it 😀 And I had an extra zipper lying around that matched perfectly. That and when I realized I hadn’t made a hobo bag in my huge collection of bag projects, it seemed like all the ideas came together!

Freebie Friday! The Tiny Totoro Tote

Prj023
It’s Miyazaki again! I’m sorry, I couldn’t help myself >w< I started out with this fun dotted print and thought it would look adorable with some white contrast bits. I was particularly excited about the idea of corner patch pockets on the tote, and while I was doing white contrasts, the idea to incorporate the chibi Totoro came to mind. While I love big Totoro like crazy, the Susuwatari and chibi Totoro are my favorite characters from My Neighbor Totoro I think x3 I actually have a plush of a chibi Totoro myself that I keep on my desk. So I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to put them on something. I think the finished tote is just the perfect size for a trip to the library or to the yarn store ^-^

Freebie Friday: The Susuwatari Tote

Prj020
Yes, I’m bringing back more Miyazaki x3 As much as I would have liked to do another character, the colors in this print that I had so much of just couldn’t stop reminding me of a Miyazaki color scheme – very earthy yet bright but not overly saturated. This dark brown faux suede that I thought matched perfectly made me think of what soot sprites would look like in a different color. So this is the result!
It’s a very huge tote bag that’s perfect for carrying around loads of groceries or other shopping, and the handles have an adorable shape to them that I thought was fun to come up with.

Freebie Friday: The Gamekip Tablet Case

Prj019
Prj019BIsn’t this little guy just the cutest? Of course this is an adorable combination of an old school Gameboy mixed with a Mudkip from Pokemon, and I just love the mashup of bright colors with the vintage Nintendo feel! Before you read on, however, I warn that you must prepare yourself. This is probably the most involved project I’ve posted so far, as it has *24* steps XD The steps are easy to follow, but this little guy might take you more than a few afternoons.

The story behind the gamekip is as such: My boyfriend has finally been able to get himself a new tablet! Even though he wanted an iPad, he made a financial compromise and got a Nexus 7 instead 🙂 My boyfriend it a total technophile, so he’s very picky when it comes to his electronics. He’s already gotten a super-tough shell case for the tablet, but he wanted a soft case for transporting the tablet too. This way the hard case couldn’t crush anything or come loose in his bag or something. ALSO, he insisted that the case must have a button closure (so there’s no scratching or hard pressing as with snaps, Velcro, or zippers), an inner pocket (with Velcro flap!) for his stylus, and a pocket on the back to hold his cord and charger. It’s all those details that make this project so involved. And (luckily for him ^-~) I was happy to do it, because I’m a fellow technophile and I would want all those things for my own tablet case if it were me.

All of these specifications worked perfectly with the Gameboy theme that my boyfriend wanted. The Mudkip dorsal fin worked perfectly as a closing flap, and the battery case on the back was the perfect storage space for his cords and charger.

So if you have a tablet in need of a home, and you too are a very discerning technophile, I hope you’ll give this project a try, even if it takes a whole weekend to finish x3! Considering the dimensions, it would likely fit all 7” (Kindle Fire, Nook, etc.) tablets with some wiggle room, or if you too put your tablet in a hard shell first, it would fit more snuggly.

I used scraps of fleece to put this together, as it’s already cushy so it makes a perfect material for a soft case. Though I can see making this from other light to medium weight fabrics as well, like cotton or a light twill if you prefer.

Freebie Friday: The Badtz Maru Purse

Prj018
This project was bound to come up eventually ^-^ This purse is a tribute to my all-time favorite Sanrio character, Bad Badtz Maru, a mischievous little penguin that always has a angry look on his face. His designs are usually covered with an XO motif, as in Japanese that actually means badtz maru, and is a way of saying wrong or right, like how we mark things with an X or a √ (check).
The fabric I used was a plaid that was leftover from a dress I made back in college. Unfortunately, the fabric was a little scratchy, so I looked forward to using up this fabric on something besides clothing. I love the contrast upper band as well as the straps that loop through the grommets. After finishing the bag I realize it might have worked much better as a color block kind of design, where each piece was a different solid color. Maybe I’ll try that next time! 😀

Freebie Friday: The Ringo Shiina Sling

Prj017Shiina 33
Do you like how crazy and edgy today’s pattern looks? 😀 This project is a tribute to my favorite musician of all time, Ringo Shiina. Ringo is a Japanese musician that’s been making music since about 1998, and her style ranges from punk, alternative, jazz, ska, funk, and even some hip hop. Her diversity is what I love so much about her. She even manages to fully integrate Eastern music styles with Western ones. It would not faze her one bit to use a shamisen for a rock song, or do a hard core punk version of a traditional Japanese ballad. She was also part of a group called Tokyo Jihen for many years, but during that time she mellowed out to just basic rock. Her solo stuff I always thought was infinitely better.

Ringo’s had countless guitars over her career, and they all look really awesome, but the one I had the fabric to make was her silver sparkle version of the Duesenberg Starplayer TV. Don’t get me wrong, if I had the fabric I would have made so many more of her guitars! I’ve seen other patterns for guitar bags online, but I really wanted to try my hand at making my own so I could make some personal adjustments. Firstly, the bag has some depth from an added gusset, it zips at the top, it has the guitar neck attached to the pickups as a strap, and of course it’s shaped like Ringo’s guitar! Even though it’s not sparkly, I had some leftover crushed velvet from a Christmas gift I made a few years back that I thought did a decent job of mimicking the finish of the silver guitar. I’ve added the star decal in the corner as it shows up in her Gunjou Biyori video and I thought it was an adorable touch 😀

Freebie Friday: The Zippered iPad Case

Prj002
Here’s #2! It’s a little bit harder than the first project, but it’s hard to pass up such a sophisticated way to hold your iPad 😀

This fabric was a leftover rayon suiting from some pants that I made. I’m kind of a plaid pants freak ^w^ The zipper was leftover from a bag project and the inner seams are bound with some bias tape I had lying around. Wooo destashing! And in the end I used up every bit of that purple plaid. No survivors!
I don’t actually own an iPad myself (nor can I afford to buy one for my boyfriend, who wants one so badly). But I figured with all the people out there who probably got one for Christmas, having a project for a free case might help some peoples out! The case is padded lightly with some batting, and gives an inch or two of wiggle room. So if you’re one of those people who likes to put their electronics in a hard case then in a soft case, this will give you room for that. There’s also a little pocket on the front for putting your charging cable. All in all, a very sweet and stylish recycling of one of my favorite fabrics 😀
