Free (Crochet) Pattern Friday! Squid Amigurumi

I’m back with another crochet pattern! For you stitchers out there I made a 3rd little sea creature for our jellyfish and octopus friends 🙂 These squids have the classic pointed head with two little side fins (done with half-double and double crochet). Six little small tentacles and two large tentacles finish off the bottom. The pattern contains templates for stitching on angry or happy faces plus cute contrast spots, but you could use safety eyes as well.

And just like the other crochet patterns so far, you can make this with just about 100 yards of yarn. I used DK personally, but bulky yarn looks great too. It really is a catch-all kind of design because it looks good in just about any color. It’s a great use for leftovers — I used up a ton of mine this way ♥. The instructions contain both an illustrated chart and written instructions in case you prefer to follow one over the other.

I hope you all enjoy it!

Free Pattern Friday! Squid Pencil Pouch

Prj083

So after playing around with the squid/Kraken plush I made back in January, I couldn’t help but want to make more squiddy projects 🙂 So I came up with this little pencil pouch – it utilizes the tall shape of the squid to offer up a good 8” x 4” storage size for holding a handful of pens and pencils. Of course you could use it for other things as well: crochet hooks come to mind…

It’s completely lined on the inside so it looks nice and pretty from both sides. So if you wanted to use the pattern to make items for sale at craft shows, conventions, or Etsy, they would look very professional! I think the pattern is well-suited to thick, plush-like fabrics like fleece, minky, terrycloth, or felt. I personally used minky and gave it a little interfacing so it wouldn’t stretch while I sewed it.

I give it a 4/10 stars because there are a lot of little pieces to manage, and a lot of layers to sew through. There’s also the zipper of course, but it’s done using the centered zipper method which is very basic. So overall if you have a decent amount of projects under your belt and maybe a little zipper experience you should be okay. I hope you all like it!

3 Year Blogiversary! Plus a new Crafting Challenge Collection!

Hi everyone!

I can’t believe it! A whole new year and my blog turns 3 years old today! I hope it was the same for everyone else, but my 2015 was fantastic. I got to make a lot of awesome stuff for both myself and my Etsy shop, and overall it just felt like a really productive year.

In 2016 I hope to expand my Etsy shop even more with lots more plushies, hats, and hoodies. And here on the blog I’m going to keep churning out those free patterns that help me use up my fabric stash. I’m nearly down to a manageable level! Then maybe I can make better projects with fresh new fabrics!

But I’m just itching to usher in the new Monthly Crafting Challenge for 2016! We’re in the fourth year now! In 2013 it was sushi plushies, 2014 had Japanese snack foods, and 2015 had punny food animals. In 2015 you all submitted nearly twice as many photos to me as last year! It’s always such a blast to see your work and the ways you modify and made the plushies your own. I can’t thank everyone enough for all your contributions!

Anyway, here’s what I have planned for 2016! A whole set of 12…

201601
Legendary creatures!

That’s right! We’re talking animals and things from fairy tales, scary stories, myths, and legends. In the midst of last year’s silly punny animals, most of the requests I got were for more obscure animals that are harder to find patterns for. I had to do my own special twist on it, of course, so I landed on doing mythical creatures. So be prepared for a year of scary, cute, and strange animals from your favorite myths and legends 😀

I started this year with a Kraken, mwahaha! Not only because it’s a little simpler compared to what’s coming down the road, but because I think it’s so unbelievably cute! It’s a really great pattern for beginners, since there’s only 3 main pattern pieces. It takes a bit of hand-sewing, but it’s nothing that can’t be handled in a few hours. As usual, my projects have a lot of applique, but you can use safety eyes on this guy, or simply iron on all the details with heavy duty fusible web. The pattern comes with options for an angry Kraken face or a happy one 😀

Aviator Caps for Sale! With Coupon!

My latest giveaway to celebrate 100k pageviews on DeviantArt went amazingly well last week! I reached over 2200 entries, which is 3x as many as my last largest giveaway for the BMO plush. I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone that entered; the outpouring of support and well-wishing was amazing and I can’t get over how sweet and supportive everyone was!

Over the course of the giveaway I actually reached another goal, 4k+ DeviantArt watchers, so the giveaway was bumped up to two winners instead of one 😀 The winners (BreezePleeze and KatWynn of DeviantArt) and I are now hammering out their custom hat details, but that means I can now offer the rest of the hats to you for purchase!

Aviator Cap Compilation

Above you’ll see all of the sample hats I’ve created to showcase the suedecloth fabric I have in stock. Check out my newly updated Etsy store for these ready-to-ship hats (which are cheaper and don’t require any creation time) and also listings for custom hats sorted by suede color. Because Etsy only allows two variations per listing, you’ll find there are only options to choose your ear and headflap combo and side motif. Though if you want to customize even more (like lining or paint colors), you’ll just need to contact me first to sort out the details. The turnaround time for the caps is listed as 2 weeks, which is a big overestimation, but that’s only as an insurance policy in case people buy out ALL the hats at once. Not likely, but I thought I should be safe.

As my way of saying thanks to all of you for participating in my giveaway and helping me get to 100k+ pageviews and 4k+ watchers, please use this coupon if you get yourself a hat!

100kSale

The coupon code is good for the entire store, but the suede I have in stock is limited, so if you had your eye on an aviator cap I encourage you to buy it soon! This coupon is good until the end of the month, so you have a few weeks to take action ^-^

That should finally wrap things up with the aviator cap giveaway ^-^ Thank again to all of you that gave your support or entered the giveaway. I hope you’ll check out the hat collection if you’re still interested and save some money in the meantime too!

Custom Steampunk Cap Giveaway!

SteampunkCapGiveaway

Hello everyone! As promised, I’m announcing the new giveaway to celebrate 100k pageviews on my DeviantArt page!

The winner of this giveaway will receive a custom steampunk aviator cap! This is a design I’ve been wanting to implement for a long time now – a suede cloth aviator cap with minky faux fur lining and a choice of hand-painted motifs on the side. The chosen winner will get to work with me and pick out the color, ears, headflap, motif, you name it!

And, when the giveaway is finished, I’ll be launching the rest of the hats on my Etsy store! You’ll get the same color selection with a few custom options. Be sure to check back here when the winner is announced as I’ll be giving out a coupon!

Since the giveaway is due to my 100k kiriban on DeviantArt, I’m actually hosting the giveaway there 🙂 So to get all the details and enter you’ll need to visit my DeviantArt page directly (and make an account if you don’t already have one). I just wanted all of my followers on here to get the heads up as well ^0^

Good luck to everyone who enters! ♥

Freebie Friday! The 20,000 Leagues Journal

Prj029
Prj029B
Probably even more obscure than some of the other nerdy holidays I’ve been celebrating, today is International Steampunk Day! I can’t seem to find why today in particular is Steampunk Day, as some have claimed that today is H.G. Wells’ birthday – though it’s not – but there you have it! I sorted through all of my scraps to and put together the best I could with what I have.
At the moment I don’t have a lot of hardware, which you must admit can really help the look of a steampunk item, so I did the best with what I had and looked to some leftover turn-lock closures to make this next project. I started thinking of some of my favorite Jules Verne books and thought a journal cover with a giant squid a la 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea would be a nice fit ^-^ It’s not exactly scientific, but it’s sure adventurous! It’s sized to fit a standard composition book, so you can continually switch out the book once you’ve filled it up with all your epic stories and start fresh! On top of that, there are 8 pencil slots so you could also sketch to your heart’s content as well ^w^!
