Happy New Year! And the Last MCC Pattern ♥

Happy New Year everyone!
I hope you all are excited for 2017! Which also means it’s the fourth anniversary of my blog 😀 It started back in 2013 and sometimes I can hardly believe I’ve kept it up for this long ❤
It felt like 2016 had a lot of ups and downs for most people, so I’m glad to have a fresh start. Though it does sadden me to say that this will be the last iteration of the monthly crafting challenge 😦 As some of you may remember from December, I announced that I’ll have to end the crafting challenge as a feature on my blog because it’s gotten too big for me to keep up with all of your amazing submissions! I decided to extend the Legendary Creatures Collection for one more month as a thanks to all of you. But on February we’ll do a proper send-off with a contest and a giveaway!
And of course I still plan to post regular free patterns as I usually do, as well as patterns available for sale, and other free promotions of different varieties ❤

But onto the fun part! The last plush!
201701
Dragon 2.0!

Of course you might remember I did a dragon last year in February, but I thought this would be a nice fitting tribute to bring the challenge back full circle 😀 It was definitely my most popular pattern of that year, and a lot of new fans lamented that they didn’t get a chance to earn that one. And to be honest, I had hoped to do the original dragon in this style, but I couldn’t make the prototype work for me at the time – I kept at it though! Which is why we have this little cutie now ❤ I especially love him for all the extra little spikes on his tail, head, and nose. And I’m a huge fan of the big horns that give him so much character. You can rotate them different ways to give the dragon lots of interesting looks.
As for difficulty: This one has a lot of tiny pieces like the spikes, tail, and feet. So it’s best to position them carefully and check on them frequently as you sew. With all that in mind, I gave it a 4/10 stars in difficulty.

New MCC Pattern for December!

Hi everybody!
Happy December! We’re full into the holiday season now it looks like. I had a great Thanksgiving and did a lot of fantastic online shopping from fellow Etsy sellers & small businesses alike. I hope you all are having a great holiday season as well! I have a new pattern to add to your festivities ♥

201612
A Jackalope!

As the year was drawing to a close, I got so many requests for a Jackalope 😀 I can’t blame you all for being nervous! I saved it until the end because it’s my personal favorite legendary creature! It is of course a combination of jackrabbit and antelope. So basically a rabbit with horns or antlers. They’re a popular kitschy touristy mascot of sorts to the American west and I think they’re adorable!
As for difficulty: This one has a lot of tiny pieces, particularly the narrow feet, that are sewn on by hand. So it’s best to position them carefully and check on them frequently as you sew. With all that in mind, I gave it a 4/10 stars in difficulty.

New Crafting Challenge Pattern for November!

Hi everybody!
Wow! I can’t believe it’s November already. I really missed October going by so soon, but I’m also excited about November and the promise of fall weather and some holiday shopping. I hope you all have been having a good autumn season as well! I have lots of fun projects planned for the rest of the year and even a few leading into the new year ❤ But first things first is the next monthly crafting challenge pattern!

201611
A Peryton!
Deer and stags are a common theme in legendary tales and stories, but I knew if did a deer there wouldn’t be much to set it apart from the regular woodland animal. It was with the help of you all that suggested a Peryton that made this possible! By suggesting this hybrid bird/deer I could make a cute deer plush with that mythic spin. Perytons are first mentioned in the Book of Imaginary Beings as a winged deer or bird/deer hybrid. Some variations have bird hind-quarters, but I stuck with the all-deer body for ease. Instead you have your choice of classic deer ears and tail or feathered ones for that extra bird-like touch.

As for difficulty: like with my other ‘beanie’ style plushies, this one has a head that’s sewn on by hand into the crook of the front legs. So that’s a little tricky to do. There’s also some optional top-stitching done on the wings, ears, and tail that add more depth to the plush. With all that in mind, I gave it a 4/10 stars in difficulty.

New MCC Challenge for October!

Hi everybody!
It’s officially October, and perhaps my favorite part of the year 😀 Since that means Halloween, fall, and costumes! I have some Halloween-themed projects to share this month in addition to this month’s challenge pattern. I hope you all like it!

201610
A Werewolf!

When I planned for the theme of this year’s challenge, I wasn’t quite sure I wanted to include many monsters. After all I tend to go with a cute theme 🙂 But I figured a werewolf could easily be made super cute, and it’s perfect for October of course! I wanted these cuties to look extra scraggly, so they have spiky fur tufts on the sides of their heads, a spiky collar, and spiky tails as well. Big adorable feet finish them off 😀

As for difficulty: the head and feet are sewn on by hand so some dexterity and skill in positioning is helpful. The collar and tail have very sharp corners to make the spikes, so it helps to have some experience with sewing points. With all that in mind, I gave it a 4/10 stars in difficulty.

New Crafting Challenge Pattern for September!

Hey everyone!
Wow! It’s already September! The rest of the year is just flying by 😀 But it’s been a great one so far. I’ve had so much fun designing all of the legendary creatures for this year. I can’t believe it’s nearly over. But on the bright side, October is coming up, and that means Halloween! I have so much planned for that I can’t wait!

But! Onto more plushie related business! There’s a new pattern to be had – and I’m sure many of your were eagerly awaiting for it…
201609
A Unicorn! (and Pegasus, technically)

I know a lot of your were requesting one or both of these guys 🙂 And goodness knows I had it planned from the get go – you can’t skip unicorns! I had to make sure that had my own chibi simple spin on them so they fit with the group and don’t venture into My Little Pony territory. They have detailed wings, a cute little mane and tail, and (probably my favorite), brightly lashed eyes.

As for difficulty, once again the head is sewn on by hand, so some dexterity and skill in positioning is helpful. The mane is sewn into the back seam of the head and even creeps into the front of the head as well. So you’ll be sewing some opposing curved edges, which is a little tricky. Also the ‘hooves’ are very tiny circles. That’s a little tough to sew on machine, but you could also do it by hand. With all that in mind, I gave it a 4/10 stars in difficulty.

If you think you can’t make anything this month, you’re in for an extra treat! I wanted to include more of the many equine creatures found in fairy tales and folklore, so I added them to the paid pattern. It’s ready for purchase on my Etsy for a very low price. And you can use coupon code MCC2016 for an extra $1 off.

In it you’ll find two extra equine creatures: a kelpie and hippocampus. That is a horse creature with a fish tail – either with a fish dorsal fin or wings. It makes it quite the huge pattern, and it’s only available as part of the paid collection!

New Crafting Challenge Pattern for August!

Hey everyone!
Another month has just flown by! I can’t believe we’re already in August, but it’s been a great few months so far 🙂 I’ve worked on a lot of fun projects that I’ve been able to share with you all, and I have even more crazy stuff for later in the year.

In the meantime though, there’s a new monthly crafting challenge creature! Classic monster lovers should get a kick out of this one…
201608
A Bigfoot/Yeti combo!

This felt like another no-brainer creature – what would a legendary creature collection be like without a Sasquatch? Of course I did something Yeti-themed last year, but this gave me a chance to put a different spin on them, which was a lot of fun. They have huge round bodies and surprisingly expressive arms, haha. And of course big old feet. You can do yours with ears or horns or both, really. I think they look great as an ape-like creature or just a monster creature in general. It’s a very versatile and customizable shape.

As for difficulty, the arms are sewn in the side with a double pointed dart. So experience in sewing darts would be helpful. The details on the face are also very small since I wanted the finished plush to be similar to the other animals in the collection. Right now he’s sort of a two-handful size at about 6” tall, but it would look awesome at a full huggable size as well! With all that in mind, I gave it a 4/10 stars in difficulty.

New Crafting Challenge Pattern for July!

Hey everyone!
Wow! Half of the year has already gone! I can’t believe we’re halfway through the Monthly Crafting Challenge for 2016. It feels so short and yet there I have so many awesome things to show for it thanks to all your amazing submissions! I hope the next half of the year goes just as well as this first half 😀
This month’s creature is another more obscure one. But it should still be pretty recognizable 🙂

201607
It’s a kitsune!

That is, it’s just the Japanese word for fox 😀 But of course in Japanese culture it means much more than that. From old folk tales to current pop culture, foxes are thought to have mystical powers and the ability to shapeshift into humans. As a fox grows past 100 years it becomes wiser and more powerful. Its tail will split in two and even more as time goes on. Once a fox attains nine tails, it turns white or gold and is the most powerful of all. You can definitely see how this motif has leaked its way into popular anime over the years.

So the pattern includes both variations; a traditional looking fox with orange, white, and black coloring and one big plush tail. The ninetails has solid coloring and nine full tails. The pattern takes a few shortcuts so you don’t actually have to sew nine separate tails, but the finished product gives the illusion 🙂 It’s still more time consuming, but if you want the full effect it’s a nice way to go! The faces are inspired by traditional Japanese fox masks, so they have cute smiling eyes and round eyebrows.

As for difficulty, the traditional fox has a lot of little pieces due to the black accents, so you have to keep track of those. The tails for the ninetails are also a little daunting. Aside from that it’s similar to my other patterns, with some darts, hand-sewing, applique, and other basic skills. I gave it a 4/10 in difficulty for all that 🙂
