I realize my pattern collection could use some more dinosaurs, and my pattern poll has steered me towards this cute pterodactyl! I thought it would be a great opportunity to make a little friend for my previous T-Rex pattern 🦖
So this pterodactyl has a similar body to the T-Rex, except of course with a smaller tail and wings instead of arms. Meanwhile the head is a classic bird shape, complete with a big chunky beak and a little curved crest. And to fit alongside his T-Rex friend, this one can also be made with the silly, mischievous eyes.
With all that in mind, I rated it a 3/10 in difficulty. I do think it’s just a touch easier than the T-Rex, because it doesn’t have that strange seam across the head for the teeth. Instead it has a gusset in the bottom of the head for the bird shape.
As always, the pattern comes with applique templates to make the eyes if you’re using a regular sewing machine or working by hand. There are also embroidery files available for both kinds of eyes if you have an embroidery machine. They’re both 4″ x 4″ sized, so no need to break out the big hoops.

This is amazing. I call my kids dinosaurs. The older is a raptor (and the trex pattern is great for her) and the younger is my pterodactyl! Now I have to make this!

Hi ! I’m a french so i hope my english will not be too bad. Anyway, thanks for this cute ptera plush, i will try to make one for my soon-to-be born nephew. But i have a question, if you don’t mind : can we use a curve needle to sew the body and the head together ? I don’t know if the term is good, but it’s a needle use to sew sofa and others things of this type (for exemple). Thanks again !
You could certainly use a curved needle 😊 I know some plush makers that prefer it. So if it works for you, that would be great. I believe they are sometimes thicker because they are intended for heavy fabrics, like the sofa you said. So it may not be as easy to pierce finer fabrics.
