New Freebie for May!

Hi everyone!
As usual I’ve been pretty nonexistent on the internet, but I still make time to provide updates for the Monthly Crafting Challenge! With any luck you should also be hearing from me again about a new giveaway and getting to see some of the projects I’ve been working on all this time I’ve been on semi-hiatus!

Here’s how my stats look – I’m extremely close to my next giveaway goal! Once I reach my 100k pageview kiriban (milestone) on DeviantArt, I’ll start up the next giveaway ^0^
DeviantArt pageviews: 97,778/100,000 = 98% (almost there!)
DeviantArt watchers: 3,619/4,000 = 90%
Facebook likes: 1,257/2,000 = 63%
Tumblr followers: 762/1,000 = 76%
Wordpress followers: 1,227/2,000 = 61%
I’m thinking at this rate I should be able to do another giveaway around June-ish, so be sure to check back into hear news about that 😀 However, you can always speed up the process by visiting my DeviantArt page if you haven’t already ^-^

On to the good stuff, though! The new Monthly Crafting Challenge prize for May is this chubby little Usagi Manju plush!

201405D

I don’t know as much about these sweet buns as other Japanese foods, but I couldn’t resist making them because they’re so adorable! I haven’t seen them personally in any Japanese confection shops I’ve been to, but from what I can gather, they’re a steamed bun that’s typically filled with sweet red bean paste. The rabbit features are usually painted with natural food dyes or sculpted from other garnishes. The rabbit theme makes it popular for both moon viewing festivals and festivals during the Year of the Rabbit (which won’t be until 2023 :<). You’ll find this adorable shape not only in this particular kind of filled sweet, but in bread buns and other confections as well!

You can get the pattern for this plush by signing up for email updates (found in the submission box on the right side of the page below the search bar). If you have trouble signing up, you can check out more info at the main Monthly Crafting Challenge page, the FAQ, or by emailing me. Also, bonus! for today only I’m offering both this pattern and the one from April when you sign up. After today though, the prize is just this guy 🙂 Though you can also purchase the older pattern through my Etsy if you’re too late.

If you’ve already signed up for emails, that’s where the challenge comes in. You can get this pattern if you make one of the projects from this blog, my books, or my Etsy then email me or message the finished project to my Facebook where I have a really awesome collection going of your creations! Keep it up every month and you’ll get a new free pattern, so don’t forget to check back during June to see the newest creation!

New Freebie for April!

Happy April, everyone! Don’t worry, I don’t have any kind of April Fool’s prank up my sleeve. Another busy month has come and gone with lots of new things on the horizon. Now might be a good time to mention that (just like for the past 10+ years) I’ll be attending Metrocon in Tampa, FL! 😀 I have some new products that I plan to develop and bring there, so I’ll let you know more about that as things develop.

Now that a few months have passed, I’m also getting really close to my next giveaway goal! Here’s how my stats look:
DeviantArt pageviews: 95,738/100,000 = 96% (almost there!)
DeviantArt watchers: 3,599/4,000 = 90%
Facebook likes: 1,249/2,000 = 62%
Tumblr followers: 762/1,000 = 76%
Wordpress followers: 1,214/2,000 = 61%

But of course the main reason I’m here is to launch the new Monthly Crafting Challenge plush for April! And that’s this little dango plush!

201404D

Dango are a kind of Japanese sweet dumpling very similar to mochi, but served on a skewer and prepared different ways depending on the season. The ones you see here are modeled after Hanami dango, which are colored appropriately for the flower viewing season 😀 Others are sometimes grilled, covered in sweet syrupy sauce, or flavored with red beans. This is another kind of Japanese treat that I have yet to try, but they are definitely fun to sew up! If they’re like mochi, as they say, I’m sure I’ll love them.

You can get the pattern for this plush by signing up for email updates (found in the submission box on the right side of the page below the search bar). If you have trouble signing up, you can check out more info at the main Monthly Crafting Challenge page, the FAQ, or by emailing me. Also, bonus! for today only I’m offering both this pattern and the one from March when you sign up. After today though, the prize is just this guy 🙂 Though you can also purchase the older pattern through my Etsy if you’re too late.

New Freebie for March!

Wow! I can’t believe it’s already March xD I know February is a short month, but it really flew by for me. On the bright side, I’m getting ever closer to finally catching up on all the work that’s been slowing down my posting. It won’t be long now, and getting to launch the new Monthly Crafting Challenge pattern for March is just a lovely reminder ^0^

As far as giveaways are concerned, it still might be a while yet before I’m close, as I’m only at 93,000 (out of 100k) pageviews on my Deviantart, but it’s definitely going to be the goal that comes up next 😀

I’ve also created a brand new FAQ for the Monthly Crafting Challenge 😀 I’ve been getting a lot of questions about some of the specifics of the challenge, so if parts of it have you confused, hopefully the FAQ will help!

But to get to the heart of the matter – the new prize for March is this fat little nikuman plush!
201403E

Nikuman in Japanese just means meat bun, which is exactly what these are 😀 They’re steamed buns made from a soft yeast dough and filled with meat – typically pork or chicken with some vegetables. I’ve personally have yet to eat what people call the best nikuman – that is the ones that usually come from street cart vendors in an Asian part of town. So for the time being I’ve only made my own — I haven’t quite got it perfect yet, but it’s been fun trying!

This particular plush was a lot of fun to make – while it looks like the typical kind of sphere shape, this plush has the trademark little pointed top where one would pinch the top of the meat bun after filling it. It felt like the buns just had to have that to call them a nikuman 😀 Also, they’re a little bigger than my usual plushies, which felt necessary in this case ^0^ they’re nice big handfuls like the kind you see characters eat in anime.

You can get the pattern for this plush by signing up for email updates (found in the submission box on the right side of the page below the search bar). If you have trouble signing up, you can check out more info at the main Monthly Crafting Challenge page, or by emailing me. Also, bonus! for today only I’m offering both this pattern and the one from February when you sign up. After today though, the prize is just this guy 🙂 Though you can also purchase the older pattern through my Etsy if you’re too late.

You can get this pattern if you make one of the projects from this blog, my books, or my Etsy then email me or message the finished project to my Facebook where I have a really awesome collection going of your creations! Keep it up every month and you’ll get a new free pattern, so don’t forget to check back during April to see the newest creation! And if you’re still a little confused about the whole setup, check out the new FAQ and maybe it’ll clear things up for you!
