Free Pattern Friday! Praying Mantis plush!

Hey everyone! It’s a new year and I’ve got a new pattern poll up ready for voting on your favorites! But as those votes come in I wanted to share a pattern for the one on the leaderboard as 2024 came to a close — a praying mantis!
It’s always fun to tackle a bug design since that usually means drafting shapes I haven’t made before. And this one is no exception! These plush mantises have their distinctive triangular heads, thin bent legs, chubby abdomens, uniquely-shaped arms, and tiny antennae.
You have your choice to make a regular mantis or an orchid mantis which has beautiful petal-shaped legs in addition to the pink color scheme. It does have a good bit of extra hand sewing, so it’s rated a 5/10 in difficulty for attaching all the little pieces.
As always, the pattern comes with applique templates to make the eyes. These will work if you’re sewing the details by regular machine or by hand. If you have an embroidery machine, you’ll find the embroidery files available for download here or with the buttons below. I hope you all like it!

  1. I just want to thank you so much for all the free content you make and that your paid content comes at such an affordable price too. I was always scared to get into sewing plushies because of how complex everything was or how expensive patterns were, but your patterns are so easy that I felt comfortable trying them out. Nowadays, I can handle your more complex patterns no sweat and have even adapted or designed some of my own patterns for things! I’ve paid for a lot of your patterns off of Etsy or from collected them from your free-pattern Fridays and often make plushies for my friends or the local foster closet. They’ve made quite a lot of local foster kids happy, so thank you so much for all you do!

  2. My favorite insect!! This is legit the best thing I have ever seen! Especially since I literally just got 2 new baby mantids from the reptile expo!

  3. You are truly amazing, thank you so much! I appreciate the work you put into your patterns, they are always super easy to understand.
