Free Pattern Friday! Koala Plush

Hi everyone!
For the first free pattern of 2021, I wanted to knock out a classic animal that had been on my list for a while, a cute koala! It’s really about time I introduced an Australian native, since so many adorable animals come from there.

This one has a basic shape, similar to the Panda from August of last year. It has the typical big head and little body style I do. The arms and legs have optional claws, and the face has the iconic big nose. It also features big fluffy ears, which would work especially great with faux fur fabric.

The centers of the ears are sewn in a really tight curved seam, but you could also applique them instead. In addition, the arms and legs are sewn into the side seams, so that part of the instructions can get a little crowded. With all that in mind, I rated it a 3/10. It might feel like a 4 if you’re not used to the curved sewing though.

As always, the pattern comes with both applique templates if you’ve got a regular sewing machine or embroidery files if you have an embroidery machine 🙂 Everything fits 4″ x 4″ hoops, you’ll just need to rotate the fabric for the face to make it fit.
I hope you all like it!

  1. Thank you for another adorable pattern. Just wondering if you would ever consider doing a Ponyo type doll or a Haku stuffie

  2. What type of fabric did you use on the lighter grey one? It looks so soft, I usually use the shannon smooth but man it would be nice to make a cuddly Koala!

      1. Thanks! Now all I need to do is find a good place that will deliver in the UK.
Can’t wait to try it though!

  3. Supercute!
Out of more nerdy stuff, have you considered designing some Fall Guys? Just a thought, they’re cute too 🙂

  4. Hello,
This koala looks like the one I had as a child, well, long long time ago…but i can download the pattern.
would you be kind enough to help me, please?
    Thank you very much

  5. I got a sewing machine last month, I found this page today and I’m absolutely appalled at the amount of resources and the detail of the tutorials on these free patterns. I would love to get one of your books signed by you.

  6. I’ve been following you for a while now and have tried several of your patterns always with gereat results.
I liked the form of the body and head of this koala, so I used it as a base for a Wooper plush, and it is amazing, soft, and huggable.

  7. This is so so so cute! Remind me of how we need to see a Stitch pattern from you! I think so many people would adore that, myself included! I began sewing plushes from your patterns and now I have become quite good for a 15 year old haha. Keep up the good work<3

  8. Hello!
I was wondering, the koala looks really cute in the classic grey, but would it work in another colour? I am making my sister a little memento for Christmas, and she loves koalas! I do not have grey fabric to use for the body, only baby blue and light pink fleece. What do you think would look best with the white stomach? I can’t decide!
Thank you anyway for a GREAT pattern😁

    1. It depends a lot upon your skill level and familiarity with the techniques. But most users I’ve talked with say it takes 1-2 hours for an expert and about 2 days for a beginner 😊
