Yip yip!
Appa was high on my request list for this year, and being the last month of the year I knew I finally had to tackle him! Hopefully most of you recognize this cuddly bison ❤ For those that don't, Appa is a flying sky bison and the lifelong companion to Aang, the main character of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Sky bison appear throughout the sequel series, The Legend of Korra as well. I think part of the reason why Appa got pushed to the end of the year is because I really wanted to make this version like the big festival prize Korra wins in season 2, episode 1. It was a big undertaking but I knew I wouldn’t be satisfied until I tried it!
Obviously not everyone needs a huge Appa, so I designed it in 3 sizes. The middle size is the most ideal, and the smallest size was created mostly so people with 4″ x 4″ embroidery hoops could still join in the fun.
In general, this plush is constructed with a separate front and back with most of the extremities — like legs, tail, and ears, being sewn into the seam around the outer edge. This does make that outer edge seam a little crowded, since there are so many extra bits to stuff inside. For that reason I rated it a 4/10, though it might feel closer to a 5 if you tackle the larger Appa, just for the extra work due to the bigger size.
Appa looks amazing sewn in faux fur or long-pile minky, which I had plenty leftover after the Puppy plush from Thanksgiving. But it is tricky to sew, so to make Appa in smooth fabric but still keep the cute head fringe, I created a bangs piece that drapes over his forehead and eyes.
As always, the pattern comes with applique templates to make the details, which works great if you’re sewing with faux fur since that’s harder to embroider. These will work if you’re sewing the details by regular machine or by hand. If you have an embroidery machine, there are files for the 3 sizes as well — the small is best for 4″ x 4″ hoops, the medium for 5″ x 7″ hoops, and the large size needs a really big hoop: 8″ x 14″.
I hope you all like it!
Amazing! Thank you!

Is there a way to get the patterns other than download. I have no asses to printer
You could take your file to your local library to print it, or send it to a printer like Staples 🙂 If you were planning on making the large version I could set up the pattern pieces on large format paper for you.
Thank you so very much for this! I love Appa!

This is such a cute plushie! Need to find time to make one for a last-minute present… can i ask where you get the cotton-feeling shag fabric that you used for the biggest size? not sure why, but i get shocks when sewing acrylic or poly shag… D:
Thank you! This is the fabric used for the biggest size: https://www.fabric.com/buy/0658882/shannon-minky-luxe-cuddle-frosted-shaggy-sand
So I’m not sure if that would cause a problem for you.
But it is polyester
Just discovered your site and I’m absolutely in love with your patterns!! I’ve wanted to make plushies since I was a kid and yours are the first patterns I’ve found that aren’t too oversimplified for beginners. I just wanted to thank you for sharing your talent with the internet ❤

Hi!!!! I love all of your patterns, you make it so easy and enjoyable to follow. I was wondering if you could do an Undertale series? Particularly Sans, but again, this is just a suggestion in case you were wondering what to do next! Again, I love all of your work, and I wish you the best of luck in this crazy world!
Hello! Thank you for the kind words about my work! I’ll definitely add Undertale to my list of requests 🙂 If more ask for it I’ll see about fitting it into my schedule ♥ Thank you for the suggestion!
Love it! Any plans for a momo pattern?
Thank you! I’ll certainly put it up to a vote and see what the fans think! Thank you for the suggestion 🙂
YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW HAPPY YOU JUST MADE ME!! I found this website nearly a year ago and I have been using your patterns ever since. I absolutely LOVE all of them! I have been looking for an Appa pattern ever since I have watched Avatar with my cousin a few of months back but none that I found were good enough. This one, just exceeds my expectations… Honestly, I appriciate you SO much for putting in so much hard work, effort and time into creating free patterns purely for the enjoyment of others, without any profit for yourself. You are a truly wonderful person. Keep up the good work and thank you for another amazing pattern!
Oh wow, I’m so glad you like the pattern! Thank you for all the kind words ♥ And I hope you enjoy what’s to come in the future!
Hi, I was so happy when you posted this pattern. I’ve wanted to make an Appa plushie for ages. I’m in the process of making the littlest one and just had my main fabric for the big one arrive in the mail.
I grabbed the type you mention in the pattern, however I was wondering what you used for the arrows on the largest Appa.
I’m so glad you like the pattern! For the arrows on the largest Appa, I used Shannon Luxe Cuddle Marble in cashew: https://www.fabric.com/buy/0654789/shannon-minky-luxe-cuddle-marble-cashew
I am so extremely happy that I found your patterns! This one especially! I’ve made 4 Appas already, and working on more for friends!
Oh wow, that’s wonderful! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the pattern 🙂
