Free Pattern Friday! Catbus Plush

Hi everyone!
I’ve got another Ghibli pattern in tow! I can’t believe how many I’ve done so far <3 But there was huge support for this one over the past year. It was even more fun to design and make than I anticipated 😀 The big bus body with loads of little legs are just so silly and awesome; I hope you all enjoy my take on it!
I’ve rated it a 4/10 since the head is sewn on a little differently and all the legs can be tricky. But besides that it’s a lot of basic geometry to handle the bus body, so it might feel more like a 3 for you depending on what you’re comfortable with.
You can sew all the features with fusible web applique or using the embroidery files I’ve included. The face needs at least a 5” x 7” hoop as well as the body sides. However, the back of the plush, which has the tiny bus sign, only needs a 4” x 4” hoop. For fun I did the embroidered version in Tim Burton’s Cheshire Cat colors <3 complete with glow-in-the-dark eyes. I hope you all enjoy it!

  1. This pattern came at the perfect time. I bought a Catbus plush at an anime convention and my daughter was like, I want a Catbus backpack. So I’ll probably be enlarging the pattern to backpack size and following the directions from your Etsy pattern for the plushy backpack and see what we end up with. Once again, thank you for making such awesome patterns.

  2. This looks amazing, thank you so much!! I just acquired an embroidery machine so this will be my first project 😀

  3. Thank you so much! I adore the catbus and have wanted a plush one, but couldn’t afford any I found. Now I can make my own. 😀

  7. Oh my gosh he’s amazing YOU’RE amazing! I’ve wanted to make a catbus for some years nows and just couldn’t find it in me. Thank you so so sooooo very much! I don’t know what other ghibli plush patterns you have created (apart from Totoro) but I’m going to have a mooch.

  8. I would like to shoot a video about the process of making a doll with your pattern. Can I share video taken from the internet?

    1. If it’s from one of my free patterns you are more than welcome 🙂 A credit back to me would be much appreciated too! ♥ Thanks so much for asking first!

  9. I love all ur work it’s so amazing thanks so much!! But I do have one question about a step in the process of making the plush. I’m pretty sure it’s page 10 I don’t understand how you are meant to flip it over because when I try it just pulls the back piece with it. I don’t know wat to do plz help

    1. Thank you so much for the kind words about my work!
Regarding the flipping in step 10, in this particular case it’s not a problem if the body back piece is pulled with the fabric 🙂 As long as the outer edge of the head back has nothing in the way (so you can sew the head front to it), then you’re fine for the next step ♥ In the final plush, that area will get flipped again anyway so how the neck hole looks isn’t super important.
      I hope that makes sense!

  10. Amazing pattern! I would say I’m a mediocre seamstress, at best (like I can make a Halloween costume to last a day). This pattern was so clear and easy to follow. Turned out fantastic! Made the catbus for my son for Christmas (and a Totoro for my daughter). He LOVES it!!! I can’t wait to make the new Jiji pattern. Thank you! Absolutely wonderful pattern that even a newbie can make look good.
