So after playing around with the squid/Kraken plush I made back in January, I couldn’t help but want to make more squiddy projects 🙂 So I came up with this little pencil pouch – it utilizes the tall shape of the squid to offer up a good 8” x 4” storage size for holding a handful of pens and pencils. Of course you could use it for other things as well: crochet hooks come to mind…
It’s completely lined on the inside so it looks nice and pretty from both sides. So if you wanted to use the pattern to make items for sale at craft shows, conventions, or Etsy, they would look very professional! I think the pattern is well-suited to thick, plush-like fabrics like fleece, minky, terrycloth, or felt. I personally used minky and gave it a little interfacing so it wouldn’t stretch while I sewed it.
I give it a 4/10 stars because there are a lot of little pieces to manage, and a lot of layers to sew through. There’s also the zipper of course, but it’s done using the centered zipper method which is very basic. So overall if you have a decent amount of projects under your belt and maybe a little zipper experience you should be okay. I hope you all like it!

So cute. I’ve been hoarding your plush patterns but I’m too chicken to actually try one because the minky fabric is expensive and I’d hate myself for ruining a large amount of it. These use a small enough amount that if I mess up it won’t be too bad.
You don’t need minky, other similar material like fleece will work!
I’m practicing with just regular cotton fabric. It’s much cheaper and they still look nice when they are done. My dogs and child both enjoy my creations even though there not “soft”. They also make very cute pillows ☺️ especially if you enlarge the patterns some!
I couldn’t help but think this would be great to hold touch up makeup supplies for going to conventions lol!!

Definitely! This project doesn’t have any stretch to it, so something like plush like felt or even terry cloth would work I think 🙂

Do you think I could use buttons instead of a zipper by putting about 3 buttons on its back? I think it might work because I find it hard to buy the right sized zippers here. Love all your patterns!
I think that could work! You would likely have to extend the area for the zipper so you have enough fabric to fold under and make into buttonholes.

I just LOVE this! Squid are so cool and I love how these look! I was worried when I saw the pictures that the contrast details were sewn on with an embroidery machine, so I was thrilled to find out that they’re actually just appliqué! Sadly no :/ This is an older pattern that was done before I was able to create embroidery files. But if enough people ask for the embroidery files I’d be happy to take the time to make some!

You might be able to use Velcro or buttons, but you would need to adjust the pattern so the opening overlaps a bit 🙂

I think theres an error in the pattern, it says to cut the sucker appliques out of accent colour fabric but you should cut them out of the main colour fabric.

I actually found this adorable pattern a few years back when I used to run a comics drawing club through my school. Our club mascot was something I termed an “inkling” which was basically a squid with a pencil and ink nib for tentacle tips. All of us ended up making our own inkling characters for the club Discord. They were really cute and fun. 😀
I got onto our school computers a couple of days before our school break two summers ago and imported your pattern pieces into Photoshop and proceeded to paint the pieces with my character’s body markings and then took the file home and printed it onto some printable fabric.
People still ask me about where I “bought” my cool squid pencil case and then I tell them about your lovely pattern!

I was thinking of editting the pattern to make this a plush instead of a pencil case, and then I thought about making it a cat toy! What fabric would you recommend be used to make sure my cat doesn’t destroy it in 3 seconds?
That’s so amazing! I’m really glad you’re enjoying the patterns! 🥰 To answer your question, a dense, heavyweight fabric would probably be the absolute best bet for a cat toy. Something that would be used for upholstery for example. But I think something more plush related would be anti-pill fleece. A heavier one would be ideal, although it will make sewing the tiny pieces more difficult. I hope that helps!
