The Nyancat Quilt-along Week 10

PrjQ01

Today we’re doing the last section of the quilt! Section C2 – the rainbow!

If you need to catch up:
Week 1 we covered materials
Week 2 we did section C1 – the top left corner of the quilt
Week 3 we did section A1 – the top part of the quilt above the pop tart
Week 4 we did section C3 – the bottom left corner of the quilt
Week 5 we did section A3 – the top right corner of the quilt
Week 6 we introduced Nyan Cat’s feets – section B3 – the bottom stretch of the quilt
Week 7 we started on the pop tart – section A2 – the upper stretch of the pop tart
Week 8 we did a large chunk of the pop tart – section B1 – the square to the left of Nyan Cat’s head
and Week 9 we did section B2 – Nyan Cat’s head

This week introduces all the rainbow colors mentioned in week 1 while we gathered supplies 😀

For section C2 you’ll need strips of:
• 3.5” wide red cotton
• 3.5” wide orange cotton
• 3.5” wide yellow cotton
• 3.5” wide green cotton
• 3.5” wide blue cotton
• 3.5” wide purple cotton
• 3.5” wide gray cotton
• 2” wide black cotton
• 2” wide dark blue cotton
Seeing as this is the last section of the quilt, this is where you’ll want to use up whatever little scraps you have for the gray, black, and dark blue. For the rainbow colors you’ll also need a few 2” pieces, but there are so few it’s not worth it to cut entirely new strips. Just trim off what you can 😀

You can cut the squares you need as you go to there’s no mixing things up, or you can cut all the squares ahead of time. This section has 3 parts to it to avoid any confusion:

You’ll need:
• Dark blue: 6.5” x 2” (1), 2” x 2” (1), 3.5” x 2” (1)
• Black: 3.5” x 2” (5), 2” x 2” (4)
• Gray: 3.5” x 3.5” (1), 2” x 2” (1), 3.5” x 2” (1)
• Red: 6.5” x 3.5” (2), 3.5” x 3.5” (1)
• Orange: 6.5” x 3.5” (2), 3.5” x 3.5” (1)
• Yellow: 6.5” x 3.5” (2), 3.5” x 3.5” (1)
• Green: 6.5” x 3.5” (2), 3.5” x 2” (1), 2” x 2” (1)
• Blue: 6.5” x 3.5” (1), 3.5” x 3.5” (1), 3.5” x 2” (1)
• Purple: 6.5” x 3.5” (1), 2” x 2” (1)

Again, we’re sewing the squares together in numerical order to create groups, then sew the groups together in alphabetical order. Remember that, like most quilt patterns, we’re using a 1/4” seam allowance. You can press the seam allowances however you like, but I prefer to press them open.

For Part 1:
1. Sew A1-6 in a vertical column

2. Sew C1-2 in a horizontal row
3. Sew D1-2 in a vertical column
4. Sew groups B-D in a vertical column
5. Sew E1-4 in a vertical column
6. Sew group E to the right of groups B-D
7. Sew F1-4 in a vertical column
8. Sew groups B-E below group F

For Part 3:
1. Sew G1-2 in a horizontal row
2. Sew H1-3 in a vertical column
3. Sew I1-2 in a horizontal row
4. Sew J1-5 in a vertical column
5. Sew groups G-J in a vertical column
6. To connect the parts, sew group A, B-F, and G-J in a horizontal row

And your finished section should look like this! The finished block should measure 15 1/2” wide by 20” long.

Congratulations! You just finished all the sections of the quilt! In my opinion, it’s all downhill from here 😀 So give yourself a huge pat on the back – only two more weeks and your quilt will be done!
Next week we handle putting together the quilt sections and quilting the layers 😀
