The Nyancat Quilt-along Week 6

PrjQ01

Today we finally get started on Nyan Cat! We’re doing section B3, that is the bottom row of the quilt that covers his little feets!
035 - Floppy Disk Coasters

If you need to catch up:
Week 1 we covered materials
Week 2 we did section C1 – the top left corner of the quilt
Week 3 we did section A1 – the top part of the quilt above the pop tart
Week 4 we did section C3 – the bottom left corner of the quilt
and Week 5 we did section A3 – the top right corner of the quilt

For this week, here are the strips you’ll need to cut:

For section B3 you’ll need strips of:
• 6.5” wide dark blue cotton
• 3.5” wide dark blue cotton
• 2” wide white cotton
• 2” wide dark blue cotton
• 2” wide gray cotton
• 2” wide black cotton
Since we’re nearing the end of all the star fields, you won’t need as much of the dark blue and white, so if you just have little scraps left, make use of those. The 6.5” wide strip is the one exception, as you’ll need a long one for one of the squares at the bottom of this section. The new colors we introduced are gray and black – go ahead and cut long strips of those, we’ll be using them again a lot in the weeks to come.

You can cut the squares you need as you go to there’s no mixing things up, or you can cut all the squares ahead of time. This section is quite a bit bigger than the others so far, so prepare yourself and take it one step at a time 🙂
You’ll need:
• Dark blue: 5” x 2” (2), 9.5” x 3.5” (1), 3.5” x 2” (3), 6.5” x 3.5” (2), 5” x 3.5” (2), 5” x 6.5” (1), 2” x 2” (7)
• White: 2” x 2” (5)
• Black: 5” x 2” (4), 2” x 2” (8)
• Gray: 3.5” x 2” (4)

When your strips/squares are ready, follow this guide to sew them together:

Again, we’re sewing the squares together in numerical order to create groups, then sew the groups together in alphabetical order. Remember that, like most quilt patterns, we’re using a 1/4” seam allowance. You can press the seam allowances however you like, but I prefer to press them open.

Here’s your sewing order:
Top Half
1. Sew A1 to A2 in a horizontal row
2. Sew A3 to the bottom of A1-2
3. Sew B1-3 in a horizontal row
4. Sew B4 to the bottom of B1-3
5. Sew C1 to C2 in a horizontal row
6. Sew C3 to the bottom of C1-2
7. Sew D1 to D2 in a vertical column
8. Sew D3 to the left of D1-2
9. Sew E1 to E2 in a horizontal row
10. Sew E3 to the bottom of E1-2
11. Sew F1 to F2 in a horizontal row
12. Sew F3 to the bottom of F1-2
13. Sew G1 to G2 in a horizontal row
14. Sew G3 to the bottom of G1-2
15. Sew H1 to H2 in a vertical column
16. Sew H3 to the left of H1-2
17. Sew H4 to the right of H1-3
18. Sew groups A-H in a horizontal row
Bottom Half
1. Sew I1-4 in a horizontal row
2. Sew J1-3 in a vertical column
3. Sew J4 to the left of J1-3
4. Sew J5 to the right of J1-4
5. Sew K1-3 in a vertical column
6. Sew K4 to the left of K1-3
7. Sew K5 to the right of K1-4
8. Sew group I to group J in a vertical column
9. Sew group K to the left of groups I-J
10. And, lastly, sew groups A-H to groups I-K in a vertical column

And your finished section should look like this! If it looks a little wonky to you, it’s because it was so long I had to take the photo in 2 shots XD – the shots are shopped together to try and look like one long photo :B The finished block should measure 48 1/2” x 9 1/2”

The levels, they’re getting harder! Hopefully you all handled that one okay, as some of the sections to come have more to them. Summon the power of Nyancat and we’ll get through it, right? 😀
Stay tuned for next week’s section where we start the pop tart! Section A2 ^0^
