The Nyan Cat Quilt-along! It begins!

PrjQ01

I brought the pixel quilting back! As I said before with the Heart Piece Pillow Cover, I really loved the process of making quilted projects to mimic pixels, so I went for it again 😀 The Nyan Cat notebook just didn’t seem like enough love for this kitty, so I thought I’d try making a quilt ^-^ It’s a huge project, and it took me quite a while to get it all together, so I thought the best way to go about it was to make a quiltalong! I thought every week I would go over a different section of the quilt, and after a few months we’ll have a finished quilt! It’s a pretty slow pace, but it makes it perfect for people who don’t have a lot of time to quilt 😀

Difficulty:
9-Stars
Ooooo… this one is tough. There are a lot of parts and little pieces that need to be placed according to a specific chart. In addition to the fact that quilts that take quite a while to do. Prepare yourself for this one!

So week 1 is supply gathering! Here’s what you’re going to need to get started:

Of course before anything else you’ll need:
• Rotary cutter
• Ruler
• Cutting mat
• Matching sewing thread
• Basic sewing tools (sewing machine, scissors, iron, needles, pins, fabric marker, seam ripper)

Weeks 2-5 you’ll need:
• 1 1/2 yds. of dark blue cotton (for background)
• Fat quarter of white cotton (for stars)

Week 6 we introduce:
• 1/3 yd. of gray cotton (for kitty)
• 1/2 yd. of black cotton (for outlines)

Week 7-9 you need to bring in:
• 1/2 yd. of pink cotton (for pop tart icing)
• Fat quarter of hot pink (for sprinkles)
• 1/4 yd. of cream/tan (for pop tart crust)

Then for Week 10 we do the rainbow part:
• Fat quarter of red (for rainbow)
• Fat quarter of orange (for rainbow)
• Fat quarter of yellow (for rainbow)
• Fat quarter of green (for rainbow)
• Fat quarter of electric blue (for rainbow)
• Fat quarter of purple (for rainbow)

Then for the last weeks, 11-12, you’ll need:
• At least 63” x 42” of batting (I like thin cotton myself)
• At least 63” x 42” of cotton for backing
• 2/3 yd. of cotton for binding

Of course you don’t need to buy new yardage to make this project look great 😀 It looks fabulous with a smattering of different prints so long as the colors fit. It really adds to the eclectic look. I personally raided my stash to make this happen, especially as far as the rainbow colors were concerned.

As far as how the quilt will be assembled, we could go for it the straightforward way and do every pixel as an individual square, but that would take FOREVER and use a lot of fabric. Instead, we’ll be assembling squares that are as big as several pixels in order to make the best use of your time and fabric. It takes a little more skill to get the assembly right, but that’s why we’re taking it a week at a time ^-^ So instead of thinking of it as assembling pixels, think of it as assembling Tetris blocks!

You see, every week we’ll do a different section of the quilt to make it easy on ourselves. Every section of the quilt is made up of squares of different sizes that make up the pixels.
So take this week to raid your cotton stash and get ready for week 2, where we’ll start sewing section C1; STARS! 😀

  1. I don’t have a cotton stash!! oh goodness. I might have to sit this one out. It will cost me a fortune to do this. My mom was like you can you do it that out of paper. I was like that would be cool. I am a paper maniac. So as you are doing the quilt I will be doing a paper version of it because I have paper galore.

      1. Oh yes, definitely! 🙂 You could probably get away with 1/8 yd. for everything but the cream/tan, but 1/4 yd. is much safer in case the people at the fabric store cut your piece wonky or something.

  2. I’m making this my New Years Resolution! (I say that but I am putting things in motion to start next week hahaha) I’ve been wanting to make a Nyan Quilt for SOOOOO long but found it rather daunting and expensive..But this will make it so easy!!
